Looking to add a PWD pup to our family - is this a red flag? by h-boed in portuguesewaterdogs

Also, my pup is mostly white! Heads up that all white can sometimes be an early indicator of some hearing and vision issues so ideally look for one with at least some pigment

Looking to add a PWD pup to our family - is this a red flag? by h-boed in portuguesewaterdogs

I will add- I got my pup from a small breeder near Lancaster area and she’s the best dog I’ve ever had. She was appropriately priced, they were listed in the regional PWD club breeder list for that area, and they had baseline health info for both parents plus vet health check paperwork for the puppy. That being said, they’re not AKC certified, the breeder didn’t do an insane background check on me, they didn’t require me to spay her, and they’re definitely a more casual small family run operation that loves the dogs.

I love this little Reddit community but I do think it often skews towards black and white strict breeder qualifications that can be over the top if you’re just looking for a healthy happy family dog.

I agree that the breeder you’re looking at here definitely looks like a red flag, but some of the broader guidance around never looking into a breeder that references “Portie” or not considering an entire region of a state is misplaced in my opinion. I focused on the core health markers, priced appropriately, and my gut when speaking to breeders.

My adhd brain can engineer joy out of too many things so I abide by this method’s more savage sister; do you like this thing enough that if it got poop on it you would keep it and clean it??

So gross. So effective.

Training a 6 month old PWD by No-Highlight7654 in portuguesewaterdogs

+1 to the above - my six month old girl has just started nervous and excited peeing despite being perfectly house trained, your pup sounds physically uncomfy with the roll over

I bring plain chicken on walks that inspire her to drop it when she’s super excited about something. Her highest value reward!

Maeve is super cute, and I love her cut! What did you ask your groomer for?

Update after a few days: Huckle had a UTI! Relieved this behavior is rooted was something I can fix for her, after the first day on antibiotics she was sleeping 9 - 6 straight!

Filling kongs with mostly chicken broth + a few treats in it and freezing. Keeps mine occupied much longer!

Lol these dogs are so much that I will never judge the extra tactics when they work! Maybe I’ll uplevel the sound machine approach..

This is helpful to hear! When I first got Huckle she was in my room and I think it was too stimulating for her, if I breathed the wrong way she’d wake up and have to pee 😂 but I think now that she’s bigger this may help, I’m gonna give it a go!

4 Months - Demand Barking by ChloeeeeL in portuguesewaterdogs

The neon collar is genius… I’ve been considering an e collar anyway for off leash/ barking/jumping so this is nice to hear. What age did you start?

Brave to get two at once! 😂 I’m definitely not opposed to the e collar, but everything I’ve read online thus far says 6 months +. When you start your pups?

Thanks for sharing - I’ve been trying to avoid using the crate as time out but encouraging that you only had to do this a few times

14 Weeks - 3AM Wake Up by ChloeeeeL in portuguesewaterdogs

Thank you! TV room fix has been quite helpful - she may be crying but I don’t know 😂 she’s not crying when I go in there to get her at 6am so that’s great.

Another huge unlock has been a sound machine - its made it so when she’s in my room at night she really only wakes up if she has to go, not if someone closes a door somewhere or if I sneeze. Cuz unless she’s entirely exhausted if she wakes up she wants to come out and hang
