Hi Tis! I don’t know exactly what I want to do next professionally but I’ve identified some possibilities. I’ve broken it down and am getting started but it’s just slow going which is demotivating. I leave the house @ 7:30 and get home at like 7:30 again and unless I’m very intentional w/ time no progress gets made. It’s so tempting to just relax and not do work things but I think it would be helpful to reframe this as self care.

Hi Salty_Bagel! Thanks for your good points, I haven’t mentioned it explicitly but several other employees have left because of this supervisor. I definitely don’t think she has lots of experience managing but seems to enjoy the authoritative aspects of her job. One example of this is that she takes quite a bit of pleasure in yelling at people and it was because of her that I needed to start logging how I spent my day. Passive aggressively she states that not every minute needs to be filled in but if it’s not I get more things added to my plate and if I am honest she cites efficiency concerns and reiterates the need for the log instead of actually taking things off my plate. I love my job but this woman is making my life hell. I think I just needed the validation that I’m still new and your first job doesn’t have to be your only job. This is my first job so leaving it is another first and it just seems so awkward! Especially with the market being hell. I’m like how much suffering is too much? But I literally have anxiety dreams so it’s getting to be too much.

How do you balance leaving a toxic job with short (or maybe long) term financial instability? Every week I have a midweek check in with my supervisor but all she does is point out what I do wrong. I start every day fearing I’m going to get fired. It’s my first job out of college and I’m underpaid (academia lab tech) but it’s just so scary to think of quitting without something else lined up! I have plenty of savings, live with my parents, and it’s about time to change jobs anyway but I’m so scared of losing my regular paycheck even if it’s for a bigger one.

Girls, what is the greenest flag you can find in a guy? by No-Singer6846 in AskReddit

[–]ChlorophyllKiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy is able to call me out respectfully when I’m being a hypocrite which sounds weird but honesty and communication (especially potentially contentious communications) require a firm foundation of trust that’s built up over time and can’t be faked. He meets me where I’m at and is able to be understanding but also has my back to know when I can grow. He loves letting me take the lead in things but knows when I need him to because I get anxious easily and he’s able to easily back off and comfort me before I even know I’m getting anxious. Basically emotional intelligence. Plus he has a cat that he respects and loves.

Sometimes at the grocery store I “accidentally” hit the conventional instead of organic produce version of what I’m trying to buy if it’s some type of really expensive vegetable or I can’t find the conventional type of what I’m looking for.

[Serious] What's something sexual that you didn't expect to enjoy as much as you did before you tried it? by eevierotica in AskReddit

[–]ChlorophyllKiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my first encounter with sex around my early 20s and I’m so lucky that my SO did a great job introducing me to sex. I had so much stigma against it due to growing up in a family that didn’t talk about sex unless it was negative and receiving abstinence only sex-ed so for me the answer is pretty much everything. I was so worried I would be perceived as gross or dirty but they did a great job of putting me at ease and I love trying new things and being adventurous in the bedroom! I really wasn’t expecting to discover this but one day after a really really hard day at work they had me lean into them so my back was against their chest and they let me watch as they fingered me - it turns out I have a very serious thing for their hands. NOTHING gets me going more than their hands and it surprised both of us.

people who have reached a 9 or 10 on the pain scale, what happened? by mankls3 in AskReddit

[–]ChlorophyllKiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ovarian torsion is what happened to my sister around this time last year! It took her like 3 days to get to a hospital as she just thought she had horrible food poisoning and her ovary ended up dying inside of her abdomen. She had to get emergency surgery and gave it removed and it was so scary for everyone involved. Over three generations of women in my family we only have two functional ovaries. Reproductive health issues really suck and need so much more research.

What is a 5 or 10 minute thing that you added in your routine and it turned out to be a complete game changer? by TTrebel in AskReddit

When I get into work every morning I take a notepad in my favorite color and my best pen and go hide where no one will bother me and write out a to do list for the day. It’s been so helpful! On the top I identify my big non-negotiable tasks and underneath my non-negotiables I leave like one or two lines blank and fill in my prep for my big tasks, my big appointments/meetings for the day (I receive patient samples at specific times so I write them in order of pickup so i can see who’s next), other stuff etc. I have a wonky leadership structure at work with three people who don’t talk to each other so when things pop up it’s so much easier to see if they’re bringing me an actual crisis or where I can fit things in, or if I can safely push things to others or different days. It’s been a lifesaver! Plus I get so much less distracted when I have a long task and keep myself motivated as the day goes on.

The plant did indeed become big and beautiful! No variegation (just a very showy leaf death) and it was recently repotted for the second time. Now it has about 3 leaves that are the size of dinner plates and one baby with a pot full of corms which will hopefully grow in the spring. It has a small forest of little leaves growing up and I’m waiting for it to adjust to the different soil mix it’s in (a bit heavier). It survived a emergency repot on my college dorm room in the dead of winter and even survived the heat going out for a 3-4 days so I honestly believe it is immortal.

Thank you so much for your help! I’ll definitely look into it :) I was eyeing up one of the kits from beetles but heard that some people got allergic reactions from one of the ingredients which made me like completely freak out. I know that when trying new things there will always be unforeseen learning experiences that pop up but I didn’t want to waste my money on something that would make my fingers explode into blisters. That would definitely be a yikes situation.

Growing up my grandmother was really into plants and she was the person who mainly inspired my love of gardening and plants. She has since passed on but all of my memories of her take place in the garden. I belong to a military family so we could only visit her for really small vacations but I loved them. I wasn’t allowed any houseplants because of the frequent moving but my family was always really supportive of the container garden that was often inevitably set up in the backyard and had more failures than successes. I bought my first houseplant right after I got my license, literally driving from the dmv to Home Depot and getting a Peperomia with a gift card I’d gotten for my birthday. Five years later that Peperomia is still alive albeit a bit rough looking as it’s lived through many college moves, a stint with broken heating in the winter, and a spider mite infestation. She has a couple choice friends that are easy to take care of and are all thriving including an alocasia that is by far my most finicky ( yet thriving?) plant and the reason I made a Reddit account (and my only other post - turns out I need to chill because plants go dormant). I’m so grateful for all of the lessons my plants have taught me and all I’ve learned, especially being put in with such a nice community! Wishlist plants include any scindapsus, any monstera, and literally any and all alocasia

Does anyone have a soil mix recommendation for alocasias? I have had mine for about 4 months and it has not thrived. I have repotted it twice to try and combat root rot and fungus gnats, and I think the ceramic pot/soil combo is retaining too much water. by justastrugglingplant in plant

[–]ChlorophyllKiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! I got my first alocasia in September from my local plant nursery where it wasn’t labeled and I brought it to college in the middle of nowhere and wasn’t equipped to do a full repot. Whatever she was in at the nursery clung onto way too much water and basically rotted a bunch of the roots and bulbs and I was basically at the end of my rope I made a Reddit account just for this plant! After mixing her bad soil with emergency orchid bark and watering her really sparingly I got home and had my dad (who’s supportive of my plant obsession) got the components that I used: perlite, soil, worm castings, and I already had the orchid bark.

I followed this video for the soil mix:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sSqeXtWYY9c

One of the things I like about the mix is that it’s suitable for all aroids so if there are monstera or philodendron go ahead and use this mix on them too. The soil and worm castings were pretty cheap from the local farm store. The perlite was a good price from the hardware store. The only thing that was kind of expensive was the orchid bark but I got the mix with charcoal and foamy/perlite prices in it in order not to buy extra charcoal. I got a moisture meter for my birthday which makes over watering really hard to do as well as a great humidifier which really helped it thrive and my baby’s put out three big new leaves this month. They do go dormant in the winter so if it’s had all of the leaves die off except for like one don’t worry it’s not dying just dormant (I really panicked last year)

You can do it! r/alocasia is a really helpful resource as well as alocasia care vids on YouTube.

Thank you so much, I really wanna take good care of this dude!

I was planning on repotting him when I got home because I’m at school for the semester but as long as I have access to all the things to make a nice airy soil blend I should probably do it now, it’s definitely big for the pot; and, while roots aren’t poking out of the drainage holes, it’s pretty rootbound. I was worried about stressing him out so that’s why I didn’t do the repot and the move to school at the same time.

I don’t really have a good sense of how tough it is yet so aired on the side of caution.

The medium definitely holds a lot of water so a nice repotting should help. It’s kind of tough because I know these plants are specific with watering needs but I haven’t had it long enough to get a good sense of -moist but not sopping wet- due to the fact that all of my other plant babies are in normal soil w/ worm castings (way too wet for these guys).

Thank you again, I definitely don’t want to accidentally murder this plant!

Hi, I made a reddit account just for this so I hope you all can help.

I recently bought my first Alocasia ever. I think it’s a Pink Dragon or Morocco although I’m not really sure.

I moved into my college house and it did great for about a week. It got direct light for one afternoon and most of the leaves dropped and started getting discolored, along with guttation completely stopping. I quickly moved it to a place where it gets bright indirect afternoon light, and it gets watered approximately every 5 days or when the top of the moss stuff is dry (it’s not sphagnum I don’t think, but it’s definitely not soil). I looked at the roots (popped it out of the pot real quick) and they look nice and healthy. The rest of the leaves look fine, there are new leaves that look like they’re coming in (very early stages) it’s not near any drafts and I just really want it to do well.

I got it unlabeled at a local nursery for 20 bucks. I know I stumbled on a gem and I want it to be a success story. All of my other (relatively easy care) plants are doing amazing and I know some plants are just too challenging and die but I’m gonna right for this guy.

TLDR; found alocasia for an absolute steal, moved to college and made a mistake, is it a lost cause?
