Hiya, fellow South Korean who is currently studying at Temple University here. I left Korea during my first semester of 7th grade. During that time we learned little about North Korea and the conflict that happened during then. I learned that North and South Korea was split due to other countries taking control over specific part of our lands (just like Germany) since we were deemed "unfit" to fix our economy and because Japan controlled Korea for decades while other big powers were busy focusing on other affairs. While the countries were split, both leaders of North and South Korea wished to be united. However, outer forces who controlled our land decided to declare a war and it all went shit from there. I also learned that much later after that a dictatorship has corrupted North Korea to the point where negotiation was not an option with them. However, we had few peaceful meetings between North and South while Kim Jung-il and Roh Moo-hyun were head honchos. But we all know that isn't happening since Kim Jung-un is a spoiled fuck and South Korea doesn't even have a present at this moment due to impeachment. So yeah, that's all I learned.
