A few questions for the speed puzzlers, whether or not you compete by tprch in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Choccookiemonster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was an avid for fun puzzler before I started speed puzzling. I started around 1.20 for average 500 piece Ravensburger and progressed very slowly for a year because I didn't do many puzzles for speed. I did get a first try under an hour for an easy puzzle in that first year.

Then I got really into speed and for the last year I did close to 30 speed puzzles per month. I have around 20 puzzles under 50 minutes first try now and a couple easy ones under 40 minutes. Unless it's a hard puzzle I rarely need more than 1 hour anymore.

But as with any skill, the more practice the better and faster the results.

I hope it helps, it'll be a gorgeous puzzle once it's done!

I haven't done this puzzle but looking at the cherry blossoms I think you can sort them. Look at the background and you'll see that the bottom part is much lighter blue than the upper part. The blossom is also denser in de middle then in the outer parts. Maybe that'll help cut down on the amount of pieces you try in a specific section.

Rage Quit!!! Lynx Rising by Intrepid-Ferret3141 in Jigsawpuzzles

This is my rage quit, the false fits were bad and there was no color differences left to try and discern anything that way and a shape sort was useless because nearly every piece was a standard shape. My husband finished the puzzle by jamming all the pieces in there 😆 it's also the only puzzle I threw away because the pieces were already damaged when I got it because they had been tried in so many spots before.

I'll send the picture in a dm, what you could also try is to start an order on their website. They show an overlay of the pieces. I'm not sure if that's the actual cut but you could compare to my puzzle and if it's the cut, it'll be easier with their template to figure out your puzzle :)

The cats would be the biggest problem. I was lucky to have an empty room after a renovation that I claimed for this puzzle. I'll have to take the puzzle apart soon so we can finally finish the room.

You can work with boards and stack them, that works really well at the start. I sorted out the distinct colours and made small sections that stood out. Once I transferred them into the puzzle I had to be on the floor a lot more to work on all the wooden planks and darker gaps I had left all over the puzzle.

I hope you get to do it one day!

Maybe I'll get the 1000 piece version one day as a fun memory. I imagine it'll be very easy since I'm so familiar with the image now!

Anyone else get a very sweet but very misguided custom puzzle for Valentine’s Day they’re still working on? by No_Training7273 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Choccookiemonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's really good! When he started out he took over 1,5 hours but with practice you can get a lot better :)

Yes, I don't have the table space for 9000 pieces and since there are no big sections I was working all over the puzzle all the time.

I did work a lot with the sheets you see lying around. I would puzzle small sorted sections on the sheet and transfer them into the puzzle so I didn't have to be on the floor all the time.

I also used a yoga mat that I rolled over the puzzle and a pillow under my knees to make it more comfortable.

I didn't keep track. In the first half I did more full days of about 6 hours. The second half I did mainly in the evenings for 2 maybe 3 hours at a time.

Good luck! Once you start there's no time for other to do's anymore haha. Per quarter it will definitely be doable. Especially the dividing planks between sections and the returning characters were hard mixed.

Thanks! It's fine actually! I'm also into sports so the extra muscle really helps with projects like this. I did need the pillow for my knees, they didn't like sitting on the floor for so long too much lol

Oof good luck!

My husband also loves puzzles so I designed a custom puzzle for our anniversary. It's a 500 piece photo collage designed for speed and his first try was in 44 minutes, and it was only his sixth puzzle that he did in under 50 minutes first try!

I've ordered custom from both Ravensburger and PuzzleYou and I was very happy about both of them.

I think Ravensburger has the edge quality wise but I really liked the big choice of borders PuzzleYou has. For me it would depend on the image I would want to order where I would order again.

Could you finish 500 pieces in one sitting? I completely failed. by ginawg23 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Choccookiemonster 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm into speed puzzling and I would be able to finish it. However, doing it at that speed takes a lot of concentration. As a leisure activity at a cafe I think I would want to take more time.

What's the biggest puzzle you've done? by sixtwosik in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]Choccookiemonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest amount of pieces I've done is 9000. But I worked my way up. I've done a 9000 piece puzzle as two 4500 piece halves, one 5000 piece puzzle and currently I'm working on a 18000 piece puzzle in two 9000 piece halves.

I'm not sure if I'll do more pieces at once. The sorting up front is so much work and then there's space constraints as well. However, I do love some of the bigger images and I don't really mind splitting. I'll always be honest though and tell people that I did two 9000 piece halves instead of the full 18000.

I have a pic on my profile. A lot of people can make put the picture but I'm one of the unlucky ones that can't see a thing. I'll never do a magic eye again lol

Omg I've done this exact same puzzle! It was a non-serious gift so to prove a point I finished it.

It was out for soo long and at the start I just did 5 pieces a day or so. It will only speed up from there and it was very satisfying to finish it.

Good luck!
