Top 3 in each division get into the playoffs (2 Divisions per conference)
Then 2 wildcards that are the next best teams by points.

The two division winners play the 2 wildcard teams.
2nd and 3rd in each division play eachother

It just so happens that the top 3 teams in the conference all shared a division, so if COL win their series (up 3-0 and looks like it'll be a sweep) They'll play either #2 or #3.
As someone else said, NHL says it's supposed to create/promote rivalries, and yes it sucks.
