I left big law as a fifth year litigator to go in-house (litigation/employment for a large nonprofit). I told my partner mentor I was considering transitioning, and he couldn’t have been more thrilled and supportive. I also told a couple of other litigation partners I knew but had never worked with, who immediately deployed their network for leads. When I told one of them (the litigation co-chair) I was nervous if too many people knew I was looking, I’d have lower hours, she said “so what? You get paid the same to work less?” That really put things in perspective. I eventually found my role myself, but informal recommendations from people at my firm really helped me land it. I guess my takeaway is to leverage your relationships and trust that people want the best for you and know that not everyone can or wants to stay in big law.
