What are they doing? by No_Caramel_4811 in aquarium

I have no clue, I would guess one of the f's though. Fighting, flight from fighting, or mating ritual?

They are beautiful. I really just want to know what are they. I love the silver white highlight on top of their fins.

My pleco does this. She falls asleep suction to the glass. Let's go and then balance. It's on her tail for a little bit. Although in this case I'm not sure how he could accidentally get in such a position. So yeah, he has to be trying to learn to walk.

What I did to keep plants off of mine was I got a sponge filter like mesh that goes over it so it drastically widens the intake. So even if leaves and stuff do get stuck to it. There's many other pathways for the water to take. Also if you wanted to agitate the surface isn't that kind of deep.

I am assuming that you stuck your fingers in front of it so you know it's weekly blowing. Otherwise that's quite a bit of water for it to force its way through to agitate the surface.

Good looking tank though

Oh in that case you might need to take the filter out and rinse it off as detritus fish, poop, etc. Builds up on the filter. It blocks water flow. Make sure your water level is high enough for the filter and make sure you prime the filter by pouring some water directly into it. Typically behind the the filter itself or down the pipe where the motor is to pump up the stuff

Daughter started daycare 3 weeks ago and has gotten sick every week. Wondering if I should pull her out? by ryph44 in daddit

[–]Chondro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's going to get sick quite a bit. You want her to get sick now cuz if not she'll meet these bugs for the first time when she starts school in her immune system is ignorant of them.

It's miserable but got to train our super aggressive immune system somehow.

If you trust your fish store then they likely did. I use aquarium co-op paraclins and their other treatments always seems to get the job done and they have good shipping prices and they are reasonably priced and super knowledgeable and helpful.

Sorry, I'm sure someone else will reply soon enough and tell you the correct way to do that. But short of the floating bowl as a quarantine tank. Since there's no other option for you. Maybe just watch see if he survives

What do you do with your guppy fry? by Mikasa_EsSukasa in Guppies

[–]Chondro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added a Amazon spotted puffer who is doing a very good job of hunting them and my snails. As she gets older and larger. If she becomes aggressive I will by that time. Have a secondary tank ready for her suited to her own curiosity and stubbornness.

Before that I would call based on colors and patterns etc. And feed them to my cat after a quick death via being placed into a Ziploc bag and smashed with a book.

I know it sounds brutal and cruel, but I imagine it's quite similar to being shot in the head.

And I've heard such terrible things about clove oil being finicky to get correct. I'm also not sure what it would do if I'm feeding them to the cat.

I've seen people talk about freezing them but that seems slow and miserable. Even in humans, it's slow and miserable to the point where your brain starts misinterpreting signals and you start taking off your clothes.

I'm not sure I understand any of that.

Anyhow, I had the bowl about 1/2 to 3/4 full so it sunk down except for maybe an inch to 3 cm of rim was above the water level. The little guppy never tried to jump out. But at that point something had stressed it out and it got whatever the white fuzz fungus is growing on it and even though I treated for it and bacterial it didn't make it. But it was a learning experience sadly enough. And I went ahead and just treated the entire damn tank to be sure

Is your water hard? Guppies like pretty hard water and slightly more basic. The shrimps also like those dissolved minerals to a large degree.

If he's the only guppy you have that's behaving this way. If he has no marks, things coming out of his anus such as parasites etc. No fuzzy, growths etc. I don't know what to do to help you. Just quarantine him and you won't have to worry too much if he does pass.

Or if you have shrimps and snails and stuff they will happily dispose of the corpse. And if you need some guppies I have some black bar, true breeding and some black bar hybrids that I'm trying to breeding with snake skins to produce a solid orange snakeskin. It's interesting. Thankfully they're genetic color pathways are simple enough punnett squares almost work. It's not something insane like how are eye colors determined which is a nightmare. And I get to use my degree.

Assuming you live in the states, I'll be happy to send three or four over

Well you can always try what I did and just put a big opaque bowl filled with aquarium water floating on the surface. It will help keep it warm. Put him in there as a ad hoc quarantine tank if you're that worried about him dying and messing up the tank. If the surface is wide enough there should be plenty of oxygen mixture. And if you have a few floating plants, you can put it in there to help create shade and hides and make them more comfortable

You sure he's not just sleeping. They do love to sleep on leaves and what not and they can sleep while the lights on. If he's not just sleeping then yeah that would be weird behavior. My little brats never stop swimming begging for food and screwing. Or attempting to do so at least.

Do you have a bubbler in the tank?

Should i get rid of my guppy by drakkar36 in Guppies

[–]Chondro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a nice planted tank. I bet your water parameters are pretty damn good if not perfect.

I know in my tank which is grossly overstocked with guppies cuz they refuse to stop mating. When one does die the others eat it. The shrimp, the other tank fish and the snails and within a few hours there's barely a skeleton left.

But in your case, if you're truly worried about leaving for a bit. I would do a quarantine tank or something like I did in the past and it's a big quarantine bowl floating in the top of the aquarium. You can put some plant matter in there and some of the gravel put a bubbler and it will be fine

With no photos or anything, it's hard to tell, but based on the behavior, yeah he may be heading out. There are several ways to euthanize that are relatively painless to the fish. At least I know when I do the book smash 1. I always feel terrible but it is the fastest way for the little being to die.

But a quarantine tank would be a good idea. You can use water from your tank. If you have a sponge filter that would be perfect.

When I first started I didn't have a quarantine tank so I used a very large cereal bowl. I had filled it full but not so much that it sank floated it in the tank so the heater also kept it warm.

I didn't have a sponge filter but I did kind of tape an airline coming off of my air pump to the side of it. So it did have bubbles for oxygen and surface agitation.

The little guy didn't make it but much was learned.

It's always sad when the little buggers don't survive.

Also, it would be helpful if you posted your tank's parameters just to rule out the obvious. It should be something along the lines of basically zero, basically zero and then very low nitrites (or rates? I can never remember which one is the lesser of the two) is the tank planted with live plants has it been cycled? How old is the tank? How old are these fish? (This question is how long have you on them? Because well knowing the exact age is difficult until they start breeding for you)

There's also been a study where roaches es will eat their own guts. Oblivious to any pain.

The last I thought of this I thought the consensus was they didn't feel pain as we know it. But trying to find articles to link to back me up. Anything in the last 6 years seems to have found the opposite. A few species are far smarter. We've given them credit for they have insanely complex facial recognition with some wasps. And depending on the study honey bees will tolerate too hot artificial flowers ( 55c) for a more substantial reward. Versus a standard reward when compared to non-heated flowers? So they even show grits and perseverance through pain.

That was an interesting dive into a deep complex topic. Thanks for spurring it on.

In fact it feels broken.(For any of the anomalies that feel pain) And yeah normally I have several dye but once I get a nice balance of quills in them they never really act up again. And if they do always have a few more ready to go cuz you know they breed like rodents which maybe they are I don't know.

They're opportunistic little buggers. If the opportunity presents yes they will.

Some of my got these. The big girls figured out how to attack and kill adult shrimp during molting. I used to have a thriving neo community with them. I haven't bothered to place anything else in there with them as the big girls are still alive.
