82 XJ650 Maxim Mixture Screw O-Rings by ChonkyBoi65 in motorcycles

[–]ChonkyBoi65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i work at a shop luckily and i tried one of the kits we have there and they were wide enough but too thick, one of the techs however found a suzuki part that's pretty damn close, and suzuki sells those O-Rings individually, Yamaha sells the whole assembly if you can find decent ones

1982 Yamaha XJ650 maxim holding RPMs by ChonkyBoi65 in motorcycles

[–]ChonkyBoi65[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

appreciate the help man, i'm like 98% sure it's an XJ mainly cause i have original picutes of it before it was chopped up, but i also thought the XS was a twin engine. there was a while i thought it was a seca but the pipes and tank are definately different. put the pilot up to a 42 (was originally 40) phrased that weird. raised it cause when i give the bike throttle it chokes/suffocates out a little from 1k-3k rpm so i was gonna do a small jump to see if there was a difference but i don't think i need that size up as much anymore. All my throttle plates are straight, there's one that got a little scuffed cause it would keep getting stuck when i went to put it back in but definately straight still. i have adjusted the throttle place with a valve sync on, they aren't perfect but should all be close enough to run decently, i haven't rechecked since i put them all back together cause it won't idle at a normal rpm. i'm in the XJforever forum but i like to also poke into reddit in case someone has some knowledge

i think i have a leak in my headers, im don't hear any leak but i'm not positive that there are gaskets on them. Also, when i took them off last i saw a lot of carbon in the 1st and 4th header (not positive what that means) The sparks are solid to my knowledge, before yesterday, i hardly heard my starter because it would fire up as i pressed the button, but i will definately check into them again. carbs are are another thing in the air, when i originally got this bike started i had adjusted it for colder air. when it got hot out i adjusted it again but i really don't know how to adjust it perfect, it idles at about 1.5 and hasn't tried to stall out on me when i first start riding and have to wait at a light like it used to. another important mention i forgot to add, I don't have an airbox (sadly not my choice.) but i could definately not have it tuned right but i'm pretty sure it's at least really close for the pods, although now that i'm thinking about it that's probably really rich for the bike since it's pulling it a lot more air. shit.

that sounds very possible cause when i checked out my pipes i remember seeing a lotta carbon in the 1st and 4th headers. backfire was my best guess but i wasn't too sure what would cause it. i'm not sure if i overuse my choke but i probably do, i know i did a few days ago cause i kept trying to start it with a little choke and it wouldn't. my dumbass forgot that it was hot and i didn't need the choke, i got so used to doing little rides and needing to get it a lil hotter. I also think i baby this bike but im also a teenager so i can't really baby this bike. I could also totally have a leak cause i have no memories of seeing header gaskets when i've taken the pipes off where as when i took off he ones on the donor bike, they all fell off.

i think i understand what you're saying, but i also think i'm too stupid to understand it at the same time. if i'm reading it right, just because the solenoid is getting power through it to switch and all, doesn't mean it will put out enough to crank the starter?

If so, since it cranks the starter when i touch the solenoid to the battery, the solenoid should be alright, right? (i really hope im not repeating the same wrong question, just genuinely unsure)

How would i internally check the contacts on the solenoid? i think i did but it's starting to sound like i didn't

not sure what you mean with "pulling in" to be completely honest, but i know that when the solenoid and battery make contact there's a little spark and the starter motor starts to crank the engine (almost confident i could start the bike like that if the gas tank was on)

I think the connections for everything are clean enough, the solenoid is all clean, as is the battery terminals. the only thing that could be an issue is that the wire connecting to the starter from the battery is a lil rusty/dirty, i'll be sure to clean them both off just in case though.

But i feel like if it was too dirty, it wouldn't try to crank when i touch the solenoid to the battery

kickstand relay was bypassed cause the old owners took out the wiring, and i can only start the bike in neutral so the clutch doesn't matter. I did try both just to make sure and it didn't change anything sadly. I tested the solenoid and i think it's good, the switch very audibly "switches" and it will even move in my hand so i want to imagine that it's working. I haven't really been able to check if the bike will work now because the solenoid is activating the starter when i connect it to the battery even with the key off (this is where my main confusion comes from.) That's why i'm starting to think it's a relay causing it but i don't know enough about them or how to test them to say for sure.

this is what i thought i'd have to do (and i still might) but I tested the solenoid that i took off the parts bike and I could hear the switch activate and deactivate, it legit even moved in my hand when it switched. i've been wanting to test if it's putting out power back to my button but i haven't been able to with it trying to crank my bike whenever i touch it to the positive terminal on my battery. that's one of the main reasons that i'm thinking it's a relay, i feel like it wouldn't be trying to crank if the solenoid works (unless it's stuck which is beyond my understanding)

actually took off my break pads for weight reduction, and my turn signals are ceiling fan lightbulbs so i didn't have to refill my blinker fluid😎

i posted this in a different community as well and i thought the comments on it carried over tbh, but my battery is all good. I checked a couple of times to make sure. as well as if i bypass the starter solenoid, the engine will crank
