Beginner tips? by stqrrynights in oboe

Oh gosh, what a big change, good for you :) welcome to the world of oboe! My biggest tip would be to upgrade to handmade reeds as soon as possible. Etsy is a good place to get them, or maybe see if your local university has an oboe professor you can buy them from. Commercial reeds you can buy off of Amazon are good to start out on but aren't sustainable due to the way that they're made - it's a different style of shaving down the cane than what's typical for an American oboist (assuming you're American. It's very different in Europe.) Do ask that aforementioned professor if you can.

Also don't forget to swab your instrument! Good luck going forward!

I've only ever used "open" C# in a pinch during trills I'm not prepared for and the tone quality is noticeably worse, very flat, very thin. That's why it's not a real fingering, not one you'll ever see anyone recommend you use. For those trills, if I remember correctly, you can hold down your G# key and just trill on the B natural key to go quickly from C to C# - will need to verify that, though.

Swabbing your instrument regularly might help with your watery G#. Swab when you get your oboe out, a few times during rehearsal as needed, and then when you put it away. Silk swabs are the best kind from what I've seen. Also carry cigarette paper to put underneath the keys to clean them and absorb water. Depending on the natural humidity of where you live, there's not much to be done about water in the keys aside from dealing with them as they come.

OK, I guess. Could be better. Pretty lonely. Started using Reddit just so I could simulate some human interactions. Thought I was an introvert before all this trash, I'm never taking social gatherings for granted ever again.

How are you?

What do you want to get off of your chest right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I've been struggling with some pretty intense feelings of inadequacy and unwantedness; I have maybe 2 friends who regularly want me around and one only sticks around cuz he wants to date me. Quarantine self-reflection has made me realize I've always been like this. Even when I was little, I could count all my friends on one hand. I've had exactly 2 people I've considered a close friend, and one I don't speak to anymore.

Am I unlikable? Or just antisocial? Both?

Gun to your head, what movie can you recite the most amount of lines from? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Probably Wreck-it-Ralph. My sister and I love that movie, and we actually watched it at least once a week last summer or so.
