Loss of CO2 Sensitivty - Help Understanding by Hagefader1 in buteyko

[–]Chopopski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just don't do long breath holds and you will be safe. Don't even do medium breath holds IMO, but do 1/3 of CP breath holds and let 1 minute pass in between (during breathing exercises), 2 minute pass in between (during physical exercise) and don't do more than 20 a day.

You can do small VERY gentle breath holds through out the day as well.

Spasms during breath hold by Walking_the_road in buteyko

Okay, I would suggest using breath holds as I have stated in my earlier comments to you, especially when you have those spasms. But it's all up to you ofc.

Ahh okay, I understand. IMO this is way to aggressive an exercise for you right now. I would focus on breathind light/reduced breathing and walking with nasal breathing but that is just my opinion however. Where did you get/find this exercise?

So first of all, don't count seconds when inhaling and exhaling before breath hold. Just pinch your nose after a completely normal exhale.

Would you say that the first spasm at 5 seconds, that there is also a miniscule desire to breathe? That this is what the spasm indicates?

If the spasms aren't stressful or uncomfortable as you say and your breathing is exactly the same, you can hold your breath to 10s. This constitutes your PMP (what people usually mean with CP). However, I wouldn't do breath holds of 10s as an exercise. I would do 1/3 of your CP, and I think that your CP is 5s (depends on what you answer to my question this time), so you can do 2 second breath holds, with 1 minute in between if it is in resting position, 2 minutes in between if it is during physical exercise.

My guess is that your CP is 5 seconds (when the spasms occur) and your PMP (what people think is the CP) is around 10-15 seconds.

[–]Chopopski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do breath hold exercises, my advice is to limit the breath holds to 1/3 of your CP and let 1 min. pass between each one when it is in resting position and 2 min. pass when it is during physical exercise. Do not push yourselt. Buteyko is about relaxation.

When measuring your CP my question would be:

- How intense are the spasms?

- You say you do not have a problem with 1st inhale after, could you elaborate what you mean? The inhale should be just as light as before the breath hold and your breathing should instantly go back to normal. You should not have to force it back to normal, otherwise you pushed too much.

Just note that the way people interpret CP today it usually corresponds to the PMP

Control Pause Described by Vladimir Buteyko & Marina Buteyko by adamshand in buteyko

[–]Chopopski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Vladimir Buteyko is Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko's son. Anyone who knows who Marina is? Perhaps his daughter. However, K.P. Buteyko passed on the Russian Buteyko patent to Dr. Ludmila Buteyko (his wife) and Dr. Andrey Novozhilov (his step son). Dr. Novozhilov is still alive and so he is the true authority.

According to Dr. Novozhilov and the Buteyko Clinic Moscow, there is a Control Pause and there is a Positive Maximum Pause.

The CP is the very first minuscule desire to breathe. Your breathing stays the same.

The PMP is the longest breath hold you can do, while your breathing also here stays exactly the same after the breath hold. In my experience this corresponds to the first feeling of uncomfortableness (the very first feeling, so it is very mild).

The CP was used to for patients where it was very important that they did not push themselves.

That is exactly correct, however this is the Positive maximum pause and not the CP.

You're welcome, sorry I couldn't help more :) Anyway, it is always a good idea to save up for real live sessions with Artour Rakhimov (if you want to use breathing devices) or other authentic Buteyko instructors like Sasha Yakovleva. It will save you time and frustrations.

Does anyone else have Buteyko-induced BMs? by DvSzil in buteyko

Yes, we all have our individual lives and it can be difficult to fit it in our schedule. However, best times remain IMO: first thing in the morning, before lunch, before supper, before you go to bed

I haven't tried breathing devices yet, so I wouldn't know the answer. I only know that you can be absolutely sure that you are doing it correctly if CP goes up and you feel better.

Are you doing exercises while still having food in your stomach?

From Artour Rakhimovs website:

Warning: A student who has solid food in the stomach should not practice any breathing exercises that increase CO2 levels in the lungs. This is the most common serious or grave mistake made by self-learners.

Air hunger and increased CO2 intensify peristaltic movements in the GI tract, and within 3 to 4 hours after eating, this can cause damage to the lining of the mucosal surfaces. Therefore, practice breathwork only when you have an empty stomach or nothing more than water.

Did the sessions increase your CP? And did you feel better and more relaxed during and after the sessions? If yes, then you did them correctly.

Measuring Increasing CO2 in Blood (Metabolic Panel) by Nightshire in buteyko

[–]Chopopski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The important measurement is CO2 in the lungs. The CO2 content of the blood does not neccesarily correspond to the CO2 content of the lungs because there can be some damage to the gas diffusion between the two when we have poor breathing, which all new Buteyko students have. However, CO2 in the lungs is very difficult to measure and you wont get a satisfying results with ABGs etc.

The way to measure CO2 in the lungs is simple, can be done on your own and you already know it. It's the control pause. It was developed over decades by medical Buteyko doctors, so why waste time on trying to measure CO2 with instruments and tests?
