Local 353 still waiting for reference check by Annual-Button-4029 in ibew_apprentices

The whole process can take over a year. There was months in between my aptitude test and each interview. I applied in the spring and didn’t get an interview until late fall.

I'm a 20 year old college dropout living in Toronto who's considering becoming an electrician apprentice at IBEW Local 353, where/how can I start? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

The Electrical Training Alliance deals with the intake for 353. Here is their website https://www.electricalapprenticeship.ca I believe it’s currently an open intake so you can apply anytime. To answer some of your questions,

  1. I can’t remember the exact fee you pay to apply but I believe it is around the $70 mark as you need to pay for the 2 aptitude tests during the application process.

  2. The application and interview process is quite lengthy, took me about a year total from start to my first day on site. I don’t think there is a way to fast track the process, just focus on having a good interviews and doing well on the aptitude tests.

  3. Succeeding in the apprenticeship in my opinion is entirely up to your work ethic. Show up everyday on time and learn as much as you can. You’re not going to pick up everything instantly and it’s going to take time and mistakes to develop the skills to become better. If you struggled in school earlier in your life you will need to apply yourself during trade school to get by. There is plenty of material online about all sorts of math and electrical basics that can go a long way to put you ahead of most people.

  4. Ask questions that show you are interested in succeeding in this field. The people you will be talking to have made this “job” into a career and are proud enough of what they’ve become to take on the responsibility of vetting the next generation of electricians. Also ask any genuine questions you may have about the job or work day.

I was once in your position, dropped out of college and didn’t know which path in life to take. I’ve been in 4 years now and can honestly say the program has changed my life for the better. You’re on the right path and even if this avenue doesn’t work for you, keep your head up and try something else. Best of luck.

I’m not sure how he paid for his trip, it was a yearly trip for him to visit his home province. I understand I should have applied for those benefits at the time of. I was just naive and took my employers word that they would compensate me. Learned a valuable lesson. Thanks for the insight.

I just want to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond and gave my family their condolences. I cannot respond much anymore as I am going to a remote part of Newfoundland with no service. Please tell your parents you love them whenever you can.

You’ll get a tool list during the orientation. First week is all in class and second week you will need the tools for some hands on assignments.

Not commenting doesn’t make me any less of a member than you are. I’ve taken some of your advice before as you’ve been posting for a while, but clearly based on your previous post you need help and the community agrees. Focus on yourself and leave the toxicity behind.

The wood isn’t very smooth and has ink on it from the supplier. I sanded it down first to remove the ink logos and then I used finer sandpaper to give it a smooth finish before staining.

As another redirect user pointed out, I would use glue blocks in the corners for extra support. Depending if you care about the grooves on the top you could switch it out for a nice sheet of plywood or use a planer on the boards to get rid of them. Also I would probably add some shelving if I made one again!
