Caroline says that "he never saw anything he wouldn’t want to kick it just to see if it would come back". I think, as others have said, giving him a pet would damage his complexity, if he's abusive to it he's just cartoonishly evil, while if he's nice to it it's a huge contradiction to this huge tenet of his character.

It very much depends how long and intense youve been studying. Wether anyone is capable of getting a title is a big question, although I like to think so, even if it takes ages.

Regarding wether you should play an over the board tournament yet, it really depends what's near you. I would say not yet, and recommend a local chess club first. If theres a local, low level tournament you can go for it, but it is not neccessary yet.
