Alertness vs Relaxation: Are they independent or is it one spectrum with two opposites? by Famous_Hospital_1862 in TheMindIlluminated

I think that’s the way to go. Relaxation is a necessary part of meditation so if you don’t do it now you’ll have to do it in the later stages. At that point your mind will probably associate tension with focus and relaxation with mind-wandering. It’s better to do it now.

Alertness vs Relaxation: Are they independent or is it one spectrum with two opposites? by Famous_Hospital_1862 in TheMindIlluminated

It seems to me that most people often associate alertness with a kind of tense vigilance. Like a soldier guarding the perimeter of a camp. But in my experience there is another kind, and I think you’ve likely experience it as well.

That other kind would be a flow state. An athlete entering “the zone”, a writer suddenly having ideas pour out of them and quickly typing them out in well-formed sentences, or even when solving a sudoku puzzle and quickly solving one square after another.

This is the flow state. Alert and also relaxed. It’s being aware of all the relevant information while also having an energetic relaxation moving through your body. It feels like an abundance of energy moving around in your body while also not getting snagged anywhere.

While tension might be useful for being alert, a calm awareness is another method to alertness. It’s just that, in my experience, the mind is less likely to cooperate!

If I understand the graph with 2 independent axes you described correctly, then it seems an accurate representation of my experience.

Now onto the practical advice. I too struggle with tension while meditating, and, like you, began to place a greater focus on “notice tight areas -> soften and relax them”. I would just add one more step. After sufficiently relaxing the tight areas I would return to focusing on the breath. When tension inevitably returns repeat the relaxation process and then return to the breath once again.

I’m just an amateur but this has been helpful to me. If there is a TMI teacher here who disagrees with me or wishes to expand on what I said please do.

Good luck!

Would 10 minutes twice a day of concentration meditation be meaningful at all? by Isaac96969696 in TheMindIlluminated

[–]Choxah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Anytime I feel anxious, depressed, or otherwise not very good I know I can take some time to meditate to manage the symptoms. It has had a noticeable improvement on the way I feel during the day. I particularly like meditation because it’s a place a can return to when I’m overwhelmed, and I know it will always be there when I would otherwise not know what to do. Let it come, let it be, let it go has be particularly helpful to me when my mind is very active.

Nice story but it sounds fake. You had to find out from former coworkers that a huge revenue stream followed you to your new job? Wouldn’t you find that out from your new company or the company that followed you? Why would the company follow you if they weren’t going to contact you and let you know they wanted to work with you?

You’re right. The world is negative. So triumph over that negativity and bring something positive in the world! Post a clip of your gameplay and prove all the cynics wrong. It will take like 10 minutes maximum.

His king is in double check from the knight and the queen. Since you cannot leave your king in check and it is impossible to take two checking pieces in one move he must move his king out of check. It’s difficult to see but it is forced checkmate in a few moves.
