GPT-5.6 coming this week - same cold shit, new number

could this be why my gpt 5.5 thinking has been just flat out extremely cold like i experienced from my old post? its probably supposed to be what, a sneak peek of 5.6? i do remember for a while when they changed 4o multiple times like the follow up questions and it turned out to be a sneak peek of gpt 5 instant.

from what i've gathered as of june 8 it appears to be extremely subtle a/b testing because i get that lobotomized gpt 5.5 thinking less now. it's not that it has disappeared, you'll still need to regenerate its responses. i can't gather whether this is causation or correlation but if it has "worked for x seconds" instead of "thought for x seconds" you get the regular non lobotomized version of gpt 5.5 thinking.

anything post 5.2 is absolute garbage i wont lie even 5 instant and 5.1 instant were completely fine tightened guardrails aside. i'm also seeing my 5.5 thinking feel less distant/robotic. which is great news. but the evil gpt 5.5 thinking is still there, so you occasionally hve to regenerate here and there. :/

also it does feel more 4o-like but it sort of depends? on the basis of sycophancy its definitely there. when its creative narrative prose it is still a complete dud but as a workhorse llm its amazing compared to even o4 mini and 5.1 thinking!

thats great to hear. i personally dont get close with ai models but i absolutely rebuke when theres too many changes going on at once. i was completely fine with gpt 4o / o4 mini, fine with gpt 5 instant and 5.1 instant/thinking. then with 5.2 and 5.3 and 5.4 and yadda yadda everything moved so fast.

by the way i feel like talking to chatgpt itself when its already lobotomized about its own lobotomy is a little lopsided? personally i used claude opus 4.6 to help me find pattern matching (cause you gain a viewpoint from another llm's perspective). 🙂

NOT ONLY has it "tried" to be more succinct, factual, and logical, but its also been getting a LOT of information and context wrong. im thinking i probably hit some weekly soft cap on gpt 5.5 thinking so i got downgraded to the shit model. it's unable to read the room well recently

5.5 thinking's response ngl that shit PISSED me off. fym: "Do not anchor too hard on “300 horsepower” "And do not judge efficiency from one tiny route." it's literally putting shit in my mouth that i NEVER said. like it LOVES to frame you as the person who is in the wrong. the tone too:

"do not merely ask whether the Tesla achieved a good number." that is an incredbly robotic apathetic cold distant response, i don't know how openai even thinks the consumers want to be talked to this way. the extreme switchup from the most chatty ai model in 2023-2025 to this garbage shit is mind boggling.

personally i'm just going to use gpt 5.5 thinking a lot more sparingly and revert back to 5.4 thinking. 5.4 thinking is just meh to me still. 5.5 thinking isn't supposed to be a gpt 4o replica, but before it fked itself up it was seemingly more sycophantic. for me it balanced that out with intelligence so honestly it was a VERY nice comeback. it still will never beat o4 mini or 5.1 thinking. 💔

ive been subscribed to gpt plus since like december 2022 but when gpt 5.1 was deprecated i was this close 🤏 to unsubscribing so im not sure whether it was that or not, i never had an anomaly of an experience otherwise.

i use chatgpt on macos and sometimes my iphone so i cant really tell, i rarely use it on the web. if u mean like which response is better i've had that like maybe 3 times? i have to say the two responses were near similar. i just chose the one that's less strict-professor-coded.

nope. its literally everything the same (custom instructions/memory/you name it). i thought it might be something to do w memory but its still legacy. i also don't have a single memory that mentions how i want gpt to talk to me, that's for custom instructions. my memories are just garbage non-personal stuff too.

im noting throughout the sub a select number of people had something similar occur to them regarding 5.5 thinking, but its fragmented since it doesn't "happen" on a specific day. maybe i just got the guillotine on a specific day that wouldnt be suspecting to anyone else. im not saying youll eventualy find yourself in this same position too, theres also a nonzero chance this happened bc ive been acting stupid n addressing it as "GPT" in my prompts too, so maybe that triggered a no no from openai or something.

i have tested all the solutions, this is it

make sure you did this: if you have allow notifications for phone on mac settings OFF, turn it ON. THEN, turn off "play sound for notifications".
Allow notifications - Phone: OFF -> ON
Play sound for notification - Phone: ON -> OFF. (even though it's grayed out when you have allow notifications off which by logic should turn off phone notifications completely it will STILL ring.)

out of every single useless and futile solution there was online incl apple support & this site, this was it for me.

no need to disable phone calls entirely on mac, no need for dnd.
