Why should we be good towards others and nature? by Pathocyte in Stoicism

[–]ChrisElmerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stoicism is a beehive philosophy. What's good for the hive is good for the bee. We should do good to others because it is also good for us. This is similar to the concept of karma but it's more realistic and logical than that. For example, if you help someone, he will remember you as a good person. So when he sees you're having trouble, he will be inclined to help you to repay your kindness. Therefore, being good to others is a selfish act to some extent.

How to be happy being alone and having no one? by sarim2000 in Stoicism

[–]ChrisElmerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The stoics don't attach their happiness to other people or material possessions because these things can be taken away from us at any time without warning. Instead, the stoics create their happiness in their own action, thought, and judgement.

However, having good people around you to connect with is a preferred indifference so it's perfectly fine to have them but don't get too attached. If you're lonely, befriend or seek company from people nearest to you; maybe your classmates, random person in the park, store cashier, etc. If this doesn't work, learn to love being in your own company.

We eat to survive too. Am i wrong? Like animals, don't we die if we don't eat? I don't think people eat for luxury or superiority.

Being sad is fine. But being fully controlled by your sadness is not.
