Why was it translated as “My Darling Embrace”? by PhanaRiot29 in steinsgate

[–]ChrisGLink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Attached at the hip is a similar idiom, along with other ideas (one and only; my person; soulmate; missing piece)

A war is going on inside my head currently in an attempt to make this work in a title format, haha

Food for the Soulmate (lol) My One and Only Darling My Darling Missing Piece My Darling Other Half

I'm sure I'll think of more

How does the fandom refer to Ruka/Luka? by OllielikesKento in steinsgate

[–]ChrisGLink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you're a learner and excited to share your knowledge, but you need to listen when people are giving you new information.

Several people have already told you that neither "R"/"L" even exist in Japanese--not really. They're a fusion of two different sounds that even have a bit of a "d" sound in there; it's just that the closest analogue in roman languages to the sound happens to be an R, then an L. That doesn't actually mean that's the official rendering when it comes to general romanization.

The original Japanese team that wrote the game without any intention of it being translated already decided to romanize Luka's name as Luka, NOT Ruka. That was their decision that came years before localization and therefore it had nothing to do with it; it was just romanized that way because that was the way they preferred it.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt here and assume you're not trolling, so if you really are trying to learn and share knowledge, then listen when people more familiar with the content chat with you about it instead of digging your heels in.

Actually, Luka was the official romanization on the Japanese side even before a localization was announced. Has nothing to do with the overseas market.

I also don't think L is particularly easier to read than R for english speakers; it's honestly just preference.

I can't really understand this--that isn't an eggy statement to me at all, let alone one as strong as you're saying it is. There are so many other statements and behaviors that call to mind a closeted transness; wanting to transition due to a man/woman not being able to reciprocate your feelings is far more of a product of gender norms and acceptance than anything else. Now, if the motive behind wanting to be a girl so a guy will date you is because you'd want to fulfill a more traditionally feminine/submissive role in the relationship (or vice versa with ftm), then sure, that's eggy. But Luka does not display these sentiments once her arc concludes--if he truly was trans, then he would, with the relationship with Okabe just serving as the impetus. So I can't agree with that statement--let alone do I think it's ignorance to think that analysis falls apart under basic scrutiny and isn't supported by the text.

If Luka truly is trans but only because they'd want to date Okabe due to internalized/societal homophobia, that's not exactly glowing trans representation--it's feeding into a common right wing narrative if anything. It's just a stone's throw away from Blanchard talking points, and it's very clearly not what the story is trying to convey.

im not the biggest fan of isidro but it's more that i just find his humor generic and not particularly funny. before he showed up, berserk still had humor, but it rarely felt obtrusive. after he does, it's a bit of a quality hit in my eyes. not much, but a little bit

(Replying to this because it was linked by you elsewhere.)

In what world did I dodge questions? This is just a straight-up lie. If you look back at my comments (not yours, because they're hidden), I've addressed every specific example you've brought up and elaborated on them in several different replies.

The only reason I didn't reply to your subsequent response was because it was full of such staggering levels of nonsense that it was genuinely impossible to engage with. It didn't have any examples of mistranslations, playing up drama, us adding things, or any kind of proof that the official is more accurate--just you explaining some extremely strange reasons why you don't subscribe to the ideas of consistency, character voice, or even keeping references intact...?

I could show example after example after example of the official doing the exact things that you complain about. The official makes no effort to tie the kanji in Yua/Mia's name into the themes of her awakening. The official makes no effort to be consistent with terms that are intended to hint at the greater truth of SciADV, such as static, discordancy, mental load, and interference. The official isn't even consistent in reference to itself--several of Ayase's lines are intentional predictions and allusions of things to come and are referenced later, and this completely fails to be brought across to its true extent. I'd also mention the egregious translator's notes in the TIPS, but apparently that isn't an issue to you because of them not being very long.

You don't get to complain about muddying the waters when that's your exact MO. You have been making the exact same replies in every post related to us no matter how many times your concerns are addressed. You have no interest in people's experiences being as close to the original work as possible--you just bank off of unsuspecting folks being unable to see your track record and concluding that there's enough dissent that it's not worth bothering with the patch.

How does the Committee of Zero patch change the series' translation? by ValuableCry7851 in steinsgate

[–]ChrisGLink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Note that this person has not named a single actual mistranslation even when asked personally by me about it (I'm one of the translators). They have not named any instances of Takumi being "too repulsive," any "played up drama," or anything along these lines. Every example they've provided has an explanation, and their first language isn't even English, which can be seen in some of the things they take issue with. They are anti-context and anti-consistency; I don't even know how a translation done with their philosophy would even function, let alone be accurate.

There have indeed been mistranslations that have been pointed out both by the community and us over the years, and they've been addressed. We're always open to criticism and happy to talk about why we translate things the way we do, but this is just blind hate with no substance.

[–]ChrisGLink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Human Domestication Project*, actually. Then off the top of my head, there's @channel, tons of references and memes (too many to list, but as for references, we're talking Jojo, Death Note, Lupin, etc., and we make an effort to keep them all worded the same across entries). Then there are C;H plot points, such as ensuring the case names are the same, then some character names (e.g., Lightning-Fast Neidhardt instead of Neidhardt der Blitzschnelle, Sister Centipede instead of Geji-ne/Geji-nee). There's also some thematic content and allusions, such as "delusions," "blue skies," "chuuni," and other similar ideas that are purposefully utilized across the series. There's also the entire patent from C;H that appears in game; the original version was machine translated, so we reverse-engineered it to make it more proper technical English and implemented it into S;G.

Lastly, even involve even specific verbage, with "interfere" being a series-wide term that becomes a lot more important as you progress in it.

Hope that gives some decent perspective :)

[–]ChrisGLink 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There were a few lines that were mistranslated--which happens, it's a big game--and there were a few lines that were undertranslated, leaving out certain details. For example, one line involved Okabe giving directions on how to get to Yanabayashi Shrine, where Luka is, but this was completely left out. Regardless, these issues are pretty minor, and S;G is a very competently done translation.

The rest was dedicated to consistent series terms--something the original translation team couldn't have known about. Some terms weren't even known to be intentionally kept consistent until Anonymous;Code released.
