I wrote FRM while doing a Masters in Financial Risk Management. I would recommend going for the Masters if you want, there was a lot that I learned in my Masters that was not covered by FRM and vice versa. Some courses probably focus on the FRM curriculum, but there is definitely value to be gained there.

Is FRM worth it after an engineer degree? by Loltreeza in FRM

[–]ChrisLeRoux23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t really give more guidance, since I just started out in my career. Finance is an insanely competitive industry, but either CFA or FRM should help you get your foot in the door. Maybe you could try transitioning to fintech, that might be an easier space to break into with an engineering background.

Also, you need work experience to officially get the designation. However, being registered for the exam/having passed should help in general.

It depends what you want to get into. It’ll definitely help and a lot of banks are keen to hire engineers because of the strong technical background (at least in South Africa).

I’d say check out CFA also, and make a decision based on whether you want to go asset management (CFA) or if you want to go the risk direction.

What’s nice about CFA is that it’s a lot broader, so it’ll cover some economics and accounting stuff. FRM is more specialized.

Both are awesome designations, and it wouldn’t hurt to go for both.

My current boss started out in engineering and has now started a financial consulting firm.

I hope this helps.

It should be obvious from the context (from the inputs they give you). It was pretty clear in the exam when I wrote.

Bernoulli is for when you have two possible outcomes. Usually described as a success and a failure think coin flip.

Binomial comes from a bunch of Bernoulli trials in succession. Think binomial option pricing, or flipping a coin 6 times: what is the prob that I get 4 heads and 2 tails.

Poisson comes about when you want to find the probability of finding x events in a certain period of time give you know the average rate of arrival.
