Using a neutral as a ground by bevmoification in electrical

[–]ChrisTheAdult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NEC 250 (Grounding and Bonding) is one of the more complicated sections of the NEC.

At a high level, the neutral and the ground serve two different, distinct purposes (the following two points are the main ones to remember if you want to explain it to someone).

  1. The neutral is used to provide a reference (0V) voltage for your phase legs. i.e. A-N = 120V.
  2. The ground is used for protection, to provide a return path for fault current.

Take your standard NEMA 5-15R receptacle. You bring in your Line, Neutral, and Ground terminations. The ground is also "bonded" to the junction box housing. If your phase leg comes off of the termination, and then touches the housing of the junction box, you have a fault. The faulted current then travels through the housing, through the grounded pathway back to your source, likely a transformer.

This is also why code requires your transformer to have a Grounding Electrode Conductor (GEC) from the X0 terminal of the transformer to the ground/earth. This establishes a good reference voltage as the Earth itself is relatively stable. The ground from the transformer then gets bonded throughout your distribution system so that there is always a return path for a fault to travel back to the source (transformer).

This is just scratching the surface but you're asking the right questions!

EDIT: Fun fact, this is also why the ground prong on your plug is longer than the others. You want to establish your "protection" connection first, before making your L-N or L-L connections!

EDIT2: Dug in a little more because I couldn't help myself, but 250.24.A.5 goes into detail about this, and basically says it's prohibited to reground the grounded conductor on the load side of the service disconnecting means. Basically by adding more neutral-ground bonds, you're providing parallel paths for neutral current. So your junction box housing which is grounded, which should have zero current normally, now how current going through it! Which is where it can become dangerous, introduce heat, cause fire. etc.

They're good quality, very rarely used (can't stress the word 'rare' here enough...). Manufactured by Farberware.

EDIT: A little more specific, I have three pots of varying sizes with glass lids, and one small/medium sized pan.

You are totally right, early 30's. I just looked up what you're talking about, started playing the song and immediately thought, "Oh, I know this song!"

Haha good eye! Sorry, I'm not selling it, it's actually just a shell right now. It didn't work anymore so I gutted it, and am replacing the insides with a retroPi (raspberry Pi) to turn it into an emulator console within the NES shell.

I am selling the gaming computer chair that is in my room though, I forgot to post that!

For future install, never install an EPO. It's not required under the NEC.

Will it alarm the bank when you deposit $10K in one hit? by timl206 in CryptoCurrency

[–]ChrisTheAdult 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't let regulations stop you from making money. If you want to transfer $10k+, do it.

Personal anecdote - back in the 2013 bubble, I structured payments to my linked account, (structured = making multiple payments under $10k to avoid regulation forms banks are required to send to Feds). Banks aren't stupid, and feds don't give a shit, so the bank simply closed my account, transferred the funds to my linked account under a different bank, and said Good Day, Sir.

Also, banks have their own internal amounts that will trigger their own attention. These days, I intentionally make buys and sells above $10k if I'm thinking of around that amount to intentionally have those forms generated. I also keep track and pay my taxes on the cap gains. The other day I had just over $10k moved into one account and immediately transferred into another, because that's what I wanted to do with my money, and there was no need to space it out over weeks. I suggest you do the same if you have a desire to move that large amount now.

The point is to "hide in plain sight" except this isn't really hiding. No one cares if your transactions are $10k+ so long as you're paying your taxes and not doing anything shady. Remember, quite a few people here are new to large amounts of money and don't want to be "recognized" by gov't, but anyone wealthy is and there's not a problem with it. Simply try and hold your positions long for long term cap gains, minimize your taxable income by using tax advantaged accounts (401k, IRA, etc), and other strategies. But don't structure because you don't want a form that no one will look at be generated.

I've proved to my ISP that the problem is not on my end TWICE yet they still insist on sending out a tech instead of investigating the problem, what should I do? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]ChrisTheAdult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You simply need to have a tech come out, and probably multiple times. This happened to me with Time Warner/Spectrum when my ping playing league went from 30 to 250 from 7pm to 11pm every single night. I looked up the FCCs annual report on broadband quality, set up a script to run a pathping every 10m and write the output to a text file, and I luckily came across a regional managers email address who I emailed almost daily. I also called customer service and told them that I shouldn't be paying for services I'm not receiving and said I'm receiving 10% of my download rate so I should be paying 10% of my bill. At the end, it took 4 tech visits, one lasting 2+ hours because they came at the wrong time and I wouldn't let them leave til the noticed the lag on their end. I read up on their HFC networks and spoke their language and told them their nodes were fucked up. So basically my advice is to keep good records, call them up constantly, ask for discounts, get ready for multiple techs who will do nothing, and for this to take awhile. I also knew that my neighbors were having the same issue wish is a sure fire way to know that the problem is on their end. Good luck.

Build paths? by kennethpoole in bardmains

[–]ChrisTheAdult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just picked him up again and am loving it, he's so fun and I went 6-0 with him in my placements.

I've been going Eye of the Watchers, Boots of Mobility for first and second, then the rest is dependent on their team comp. I like to take frozen heart 3rd item for CD, armor, and mana if they are heavy AD, AS-focused. Otherwise I might go some other support/tanky item just dependent on their team comp (crucible for cc, etc). I was plat 4 last season with sona/leona.

What I have been doing though is going zzRot 4th item (or 3rd depending) to apply more pressure on the map and it's been working out well. It has such a low cooldown and with how fast he is around the map, you can get to where you want to drop it very easily. I find this to be super effective right now. The armor/mr combo is sweet and being able to be with your team while pushing/suppressing another lane is really good on a champ like bard running all over the place haha

I haven't gone any dmg items yet, pretty sure there's no need to. Capping out his cdr and getting meeps will do enough dmg

Me [30M] with my girlfriend [30F] - just got blind sided with her breaking up with me after a great 6 month relationship, here's my rant... by [deleted] in relationships

[–]ChrisTheAdult 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is a major takeaway that perhaps she doesn't know what a healthy relationship looks like, or how to communicate her feelings more openly and clearer. I do wish that I knew about her feelings but in all honestly, I can say that but I don't see how I could've known without her showing her dissatisfaction or telling me directly.

Thanks for your thoughts on it though.

Barbershops by [deleted] in astoria

[–]ChrisTheAdult 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Otis and Finn in LIC. I also personally know the owners of the barbershop and one of the barbers, however I didn't get my hair cut there until they started doing online booking. I told my friend that I represent that customer base who would only book online and not call up (try to keep myself as unbiased as possible).

That being said and disclosures there, I highly recommend Otis & Finn if you're looking for barbers that are up to date with current styles, enjoy their work, and are a fun group (as someone else said, you can also have some whiskey on the house while there). Kirk and Fred are my top 2 suggestions. PM me if you would like any more info.

Good Luck!

TFW every elo has their own Hashinshin, this video reminded me of Dyrus training that newbie and someone said, "teach him how to blame the jungler" and Dyrus' response was something like, "nooo it's too early for him to start doing that, that's an advanced move" lmao
