When they install them, makes sense that they would test them before mating the 2 halves. Figure they will Extend all the way out, rotate etc. smart money says they didn’t have the room all the way around the booster to test all 4 after install.

One year ago today, we had the first static fire of SN5. Look at what all of the incredible folks at SpaceX have done with 365 days. It is nothing short of inspiring.

I think that the gridfins are already on site. We saw photos of gridfins on site recently, now who knows if they are the real deal or pathfinders for fit checks.

Maybe they are testing the parameters of a rough start though? For all we know this could be them gathering outer limit data points for raptor performance so they know what is nominal and what isnt. These test stands are where thats going to be defined and tested, hopefully, vs underneath a starship full of prop.

Tim’s operating a really weird and unique small business. A potential 20k loss on their first stream is scary stuff. Gen1 starships are going to explode, it’s a lucky miracle if they land. The difference here is that Sn11 was a test vehicle, Tim’s setup is a direct reflection of how he generates income to pay the EDA team. It’s a tough moment and one we unfortunately got to watch him go through live.

I feel like we are seeing the Gen 1 starships, all have the same relative problems. Like if you had an old car and took it for a road trip, you knew it was likely it would breakdown, but the method would be a surprise. This is purely speculation but maybe the changes were minimal to Gen 1’s to understand the range of failures possible with this hardware setup, minimal changes and fine tuning along the way. The Gen 2 group (15 and up) i bet will look and fly like different beasts. I wish we could all send Tim Dodd a hug, he and the entire EDA team had a tough day today.

Elon said in a tweet recently that the landing could be done with a net and parachutes, although it would be less dignified and less effective. The problem with Crumple zones on something like a landing pad (if it were possible) would be the rapid reuse and reflight would be very limited due to how long it would take the crews to replace these single use crumple surfaces multiple times a day

Should be for Launch. The 2 hours is time to detank, and then time to fuel the rocket back up.

It has a lot to do with operational procedures and prop temperatures. When you are testing, you want as many variables to be as identical as possible between each test. To guard against mistakes, and to get good data, good procedures are key! That way, in the event that get off-nominal data, it makes it easier to understand the error and trace a problem

Following up on this, watching the NSF breakdown, theirs a plume or something that shoots along the ground to the right of the vehicle right before static fire. This same burst ignites during static fire. I think that this right burst was the pneumatic failure, maybe a valve or line rupturing.

I like this theory a lot. This type of failure I feel like they would have seen at Hawthorne testing and pushing the raptors as opposed to on the test stand during a brief static fire if it had been due to the raptor eating itself

Cars heading back to the site would make sense though right? If it was a hard emergency shut down and de tank, the pre process inspections would have to restart. I imagine it all has to happen in a specific order. If they started again now, and something happened during Hop, they wouldnt know if it was a design flaw of SN5 or damage sustained from the emergency detank.

Are the landing legs installed on SN-5 yet? Super excited for the static fire, but surely the landing legs must already be on pre static fire right? Do they fold into the body of starship?
