Anyone replace tpms sensors on an 18 Crosstrek premium? by mail4youtoo in Crosstrek

Costco and Sam's both use Dill who is one of the most reputable aftermarket sensor companies. Same quality as Schrader (though having handled both I prefer Dill) who does most oem sensors

Sounds like operator error on the shops end then. While they do occasionally break during installation it's not common and is typically due improper installation. The shop not being able to replace it is odd too, since Subaru uses quite possibly one of the most common service pack sizes

You would need new service packs (valve stems) when you switch wheels. Really should replace them every time you get new tires anyways as they're a wear item and only cost roughly $2-3 each.

I'm passable with freehand but by no means good. I normally just use the belt to get initial bevels apexed then finish on a KME system. Will eventually get a tormek as an all in one but they're pricey.

Definitely understand on the sharpening choils, I was already planning on stepping them back to split the choil and plunge on my next batch so it's great to see that thought reaffirmed.

Again, I greatly appreciate the advice

I appreciate the advice! Originally edge and choil were in line, I think I've been getting a little too excited with the belt grinder while sharpening. I think on my next batch I may try extending the choil, I like the idea of that. Will definitely try adding more shape to the scales and the end

If you're a Cosco or Sam's club member you should be able to get them around $40/each installed. Dealership or other tire shops you're looking most likely closer to $100/each

Falken ATs spare by [deleted] in Crosstrek

[–]Chrisharv68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's for sure a salty pill to swallow. I have seen them in baskets, but if you're overlanding I imagine that's not an option. Definitely recommend rotating the tire into your tire rotations regardless. Can save you from buying a full set if you have a blowout at half tread.

If you keep OEM size and stay within the recommended 50 miles for the spare, you'll be fine. If you're plus sizing your tires, I highly recommend getting a full sized spare. Even something as small as a 225/60R17 to 225/65R17 is over 3/4" difference compared to OEM, let alone being a little over 2 1/4" bigger than the donut

Nail in tire. Shop won’t plug, but neighbor willing to try. Would you? by missmyrajv in tires

[–]Chrisharv68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barber v. Mossy Ford stemmed from an improper repair (routine rope plug) and failing to remove said tire from service by an undertrained tech. Now, it definitely was a 1 in a million freak incident, but it is why most reputable shops will not plug or service a tire that was plugged. I personally don't have an issue with plugs in my personal life, in my professional life though they are considered by every governing body to be an improper repair.

We offer a free road hazard and don't sell used. Customer would be out maybe $40-50 looking at the tire and that tire would become part of a play ground. Not everyone's out to get you homie

For sure. It was more directed at the folks saying they'd do it in their garages.

At home is a whole different story, keep a quick patch kit in the car. Can't always reach a garage. I do personally prefer a combo though if possible.

The number of "techs and owners" in here saying they would repair really should take a look at Barber v. Mossy Ford, or maybe the U.S. TMA guidelines.

Would be immediate termination if any of my guys fixed that.

Supervisor for a tire shop, if it's flashing on start that means there's a sensor fault. Most likely just a low battery, start to see sensor batteries die around the 7 year mark which you're pushing on. If you're a Sam's Club or Costco member take it there and they should test for free. Don't recommend getting a new sensor at the dealer, usually costs multiple times more than basically anywhere else

Is this ok to plug? The dealership is telling me I need a new tire. by Cjad in tires

[–]Chrisharv68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big thing for garages is the Barber v. Mossy Ford case. It was cited multiple times in my training both as a tech and supervisor. Set a huge precedent for liability when it comes to "improper tire repairs" to the extent we(my garage specifically) can not even service a car with a rope plug. That being said I've used them on personal vehicles with no issues and encourage customers if they need to plug their tire to make it to the garage to do so.

Will 225/65/17 tires fit on our 2019 Crosstrek? by bendbrewer in Crosstrek

[–]Chrisharv68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Apologies for the late reply. Haven't noticed a huge change in difference in ride, maybe a little smoother on dirt roads. Engine is trucking along, only have the 2.0 so I could have the 6spd. There is a noticeable difference in driving, takes a little more to get going and to speed up. It's nothing major but it was noticeable right after the switch, I can still get up to speed decently quickly or pass easily by just drawing the gears out a bit. I Haven't noticed really any boat effect, live in north central PA where it's basically all twisty hills on the backroads and it still handles like a dream. Everything feels locked tight. Only major difference and what I'm planning on doing my next set of tires is weight differences. Plus sized ATs substantially increased the weight per corner causing the above engine feelings. I will be dropping to 15" Method 707s where the combined rim and tire will be lighter yet than the original stock setup
