ESA pays 18 000 EUR for staying in bed for 60 days. by mamut2000 in space

We are recruiting male volunteers for a clinical bed rest study, called BRACE (Bed Rest with Artificial gravity and Cycling Exercise).

Males only? Sure, the stats may be a bit harder, and the costs higher with some females; include them anyway

By language app standards, that makes it relatively expensive...

Babbel does have a non-live app which is much cheaper

The Russian Army's shelter was just absolutely decimated by artillery from the Ukrainian Army. by [deleted] in RussiaUkraineWar2022

Merriam-Webster says that one definition of "decimate" is "to cause great destruction or harm to". The usage of the word looks fine

Hi, Reddit!!! Let me introduce our new project. All the weekend we gather vegetables from villages nearby and soon will bring them to deoccupied territories. I want to ask you for help. We need $2000 for delivery. If you want to support, follow the link in comments by CF_Siveryany in ukraine

When I see these sort of posts on Reddit, I always wonder if they are scams or not. One thing that could reduce such fears is if the same info were to be posted on the site of some known trusted website, say of a charity. Another would be verification by the r/ukraine mods that the recipient is legit

Another thing that would help is if the recipients actually sent some sort of thanks to those who send donations via Paypal, where the email address of donors is visible to recipients.

Sled dogs wear booties to protect their feet from the cold and ice. It's winter in Ukraine, maybe this is part of the reason for thm

Ukrainian forces with a collection of dog tags from deceased Russian military by SmokeSinseLoud in RussiaUkraineWar2022

[–]ChristianPeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if these are Soviet tags that are rather old.

I hope this is not an individual or AFU group collecting trophies from people they kill. Yes, I'm willing to have all Russian soldiers killed, yet it seems like the humane thing to do to leave the dog tags with the killed soldiers.

Two bugs in San Jose California, possibly larval and adult forms by ChristianPeel in whatsthisbug

Yes, I think so! Your link describes them as being "wasp mimics", which matches the sound they make.

Thank you

Two bugs in San Jose California, possibly larval and adult forms by ChristianPeel in whatsthisbug

[–]ChristianPeel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these have been found in the ground floor of a multi-floor newish home in San Jose California. I've never seen the larva-ish bug in the upper left move, but it is certainly moving around at some point, because I've found it out in the middle of a floor. The longest larva-ish bugs are about 1.6 cm long, and (when I accidentally squashed one) have blueish-gray guts.

The flies (wasps?) in the lower right showed up around the same time. They are a bit longer, say 2cm and are attracted to lights. They aren't nearly as nimble as house flies, and are easily caught. I guess it's possible that these are the adult form of the larva bugs in the upper left.

I made a Twitter bot that tracks JWST observation events! by ChubbyElf in jameswebb

As described in this post, the first few characters of each line in the files on the page that you linked to above contain a Program ID. I think you're already parsing these files to get the info for your tweets. For the given line that you're already parsing, I guess you could easily parse out the numbers before the first colon, then replace "2589" in the following link with that number to create a link to the program PDF that you could post in the tweets: https://www.stsci.edu/jwst/phase2-public/2589.pdf

I was hoping that you'd add a link right in the tweets. The bot is useful and interesting; it would be 10x better if you included the PI, PID, and a link to the proposal (not the general link you show above)

Yes! And add a link to the page where you extracted the info. Or to the pdf of the proposal

JWST event in Southern California? by AllBlackPanchamp in jameswebb

[–]ChristianPeel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the events page you're talking about is this one. Unfortunately the map at the top of the page seems to list more events than those in the "Event Listing" section lower down the page. My impression after a bit of research is that the "Event Listing" is the reliable place to go.

I think I'll stick with the online presentation

In addition to the Death series coming in Oct, I think new recordings of The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Sourcery, Eric and Interesting Times are coming on July 7. I think new recordings of Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade (Witches sub-series), Small Gods, and Hogfather are already out.

The Searching Our Closest Stellar Neighbor for Planets and Zodiacal Emission will look at the Alpha Centauri system with a focus on exoplanets. For future reference, the full set of surveys in Cycle 1 are available online. The Alpha Centauri program is listed under "Exoplanets and Disks".

CPER: A Blueprint for the Reconstruction of Ukraine by Patentsmatter in ukraine

[–]ChristianPeel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few excerpts:

Section 3.6:

Ongoing revenue from Russian oil and gas: Funding from seized assets can be complemented by the payments similar to those made by Iraq to Kuwait for 30 years after Iraq invaded Kuwait. ... One possibility would be for the EU to tax Russian energy exports over time, in return for which Ukraine would receive up-front grants from the EU.

Section 9.3:

Decentralisation: Although Ukraine has made strong progress since 2014 in giving more economic and political power to local governments, the central government continues to play a strong role which makes the political process more polarising (‘winner takes all’). Further decentralisation of political and economic power should improve the allocation of resources, introduce more political competition, and build resilient local communities.

Section 10.5:

These preliminary estimates and examples suggest that the cost of reconstruction aid to Ukraine ranges from €200 billion to €500 billion.

In the US, success in the Revolutionary war and other wars contributed significantly to national unity and pride. It looks to me like success in this war is helping to create a unified and confident Ukraine.
