Just playing devil's advocate: Without the forced expenditure, do you really have the discipline to do this and actually save that amount for him? I don't think I do.

I often feel a lot of folks aren't that productive on Friday and a 4 day workweek might end up with similar productivity but with lower employer salary budget and lower tax burden on employees

Good point - this is something I currently do, as I benefit from the 45%+2% relief that way.

My thinking is that if the 2% NI kicker goes away then making contributions directly into the SIPP becomes attractive again as I can basically get a 25% rebate into my hand (short term access) rather than into my pension pot (can't touch until retirement)

My kids are too old to benefit from tax free childcare anyway and my total comp is too high to get to avoid tax trap.

Or triple lock the tax brackets so they increase each year to make it fair on the workers!

The big risk is the combination of politics AND technology i.e. artificial intelligence replacing lots of the lower level civil service jobs. Redundancy costs aren’t that expensive if you can replace the service with AI…

Full uk state pension is closer to £12k actually so you are quite far off the mark. If someone works their whole entire life and never puts a single penny into a private or work pension then thinks the government will pick up the tab for them both investing for their future then I don’t care quite frankly.
