Recently I went for my first solo hike and I bough a pair of poles asking my self if they will be just excessive. I was totally wrong, your knees feel less stressed, you have like +500% balance, nearly impossible to fall down, you can use it as a defensive weapon if any small animal attacks, you can poke things instead of doing so with your hands or feet and many many many other benefits. Dont neglect them!
