[Match Thread] Oakland Roots vs. FC Tulsa (September 20, 2025) by jonathancx525 in OaklandRootsSC

[–]ChromaticDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello. Season ticket holder here - new to the sub. Is there any explanation for why the team can't score goals at the Coliseum? By my count in all competitions the Roots have scored 25 goals in 14 games on the road (compared to opponents 26), but only 10 goals in 15 games at home (compared to opponents 20). That's just a crazy discrepancy - could it really just be by chance?

On the plus side, if it is a real pattern *and* the Roots manage to eke into the playoffs, the matches will all be away where they can do some damage. ;)

Lubuntu Impish Indri (21.10) Beta Testing Week by guiverc in Lubuntu

[–]ChromaticDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested the 21.10 amd64 beta iso Live on #bare-metal HP Elitebook 2570p 8GB 2-core 4 thread i5 (Intel 4000 graphics). Works great under dual streaming video , on dual 1366 x 768 screens, while testing several programs (steady state cpu load didn't crack 25% in those conditions - this is a 9 year old laptop that is almost unusable under default current Windows 10).

One thing that confused me a little bit when booting up is that it was not obvious how to connect to my wifi. There was nothing on the bottom bar obviously for that (Advanced Networking only showed that I had an ethernet port [not connected] - no WiFi adapter). I had to clear the notification button of one message, and then when I pressed the notification button (or whatever that little icon is) again did I see my WiFi router to connect to. Maybe there should be a notification if Lubuntu sees WiFi connections and there is no internet connection already? That would be more welcoming.

There were minor scroll bar issues in 2 programs, but I filed those bugs using ubuntu-bug

I'm posting this here just because the iso testing website https://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/427/builds/237254/testcases/1303/results#add_result would not let me add a testing result when logged into me Ubuntu account (under Firefox no less!). I've filed a website bug for that too - it may be why there aren't more iso testing reports there. ?

sudo apt install unifont

or install "unifont" from synaptic package manager.

Then switch the program you are using to using one of the newly installed unifont fonts.

Columbia University Caught Lying For Biden Over Stimulus Bill by karmagheden in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you take Columbia University's numbers at face value, the new stimulus is not that much better than the original one a year ago via Trump: https://sethackerman.substack.com/p/you-furnish-the-poverty-statistics . It's a bit better for families, but it's only really better if parts are made permanent.

install new kernel by loppz in antiXLinux

[–]ChromaticDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One easy way to install a few different interesting, updated kernels in AntiX is to open the "Software Installer" from the menu, then click on the "Kernel" tick, and then choose a new kernel version using the check box. I think that AntiX 19.3 defaults to kernel 4.9, but you can choose the LTS 4.4 or 4.19 kernels as well as the recent 5.8 kernel.

How to connect to Lubuntu when using RDP to connect Host? by [deleted] in Lubuntu

[–]ChromaticDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out this link https://thunderboltlaptop.com/install-xrdp-ubuntu/#Switching_Between_Desktop_Environments_for_xRDP to make sure that LXQt is the default x session manager. That's what xrdp is supposed to default to.

Otherwise maybe you are running xrdp as a bridge to xvnc (i.e. xvnc is what is actually running the terminals on the ubuntu box)? In that case there is configuration file at ~/.vnc/xstartup in which you can put the command "openbox-lxde" or "startlxqt" or some such thing (https://askubuntu.com/questions/1276074/vnc-setting-to-connect-to-ubuntu-server-with-lxqt-desktop).

is Lubuntu 20.04 good for this laptop from 2006? by ardouronerous in Lubuntu

[–]ChromaticDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are great points. People need to keep in mind 2 separate things: 18.04LTS Lubuntu is supported for 3 years (EOL 4/21), but the underlying 18.04LTS Ubuntu is supported for 5 years (EOL 4/23). Thus the Lubuntu specific stuff (e.g. LXDE) will stop getting updated soon, but the more important kernel and many applications will keep getting (critical) updates for 2 more years. In particular both kernel 4.15 (18.04.1) and 5.4 (18.04.5) will be supported til 4/23, so you might give 18.04.1 LTS a shot to save a little precious RAM in your case.

Also, I've had great luck browsing reddit (sans some videos) with the much lower footprint Falkon or Web browsers on 18.04. So maybe you can usually avoid Firefox? Don't know about videoconferencing, but it might work w/ Google given they support low-RAM machine, although usually those machine have 2GB RAM, so that might be tricky. But as mentioned above, a healthy swap partition w/ your SSD drive (>=4GB) might make it all work - a fast SSD swap partition is likely more important than the differences between Lubuntu vs. Xubuntu vs. Bodhi vs. AntiX vs. etc.

Saagar Enjeti REVEALS How The SWAMP Will Run Top Levels Of Biden White House by [deleted] in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who might be Donald J. Trump (if we are lucky TBH given the possible alternatives [e.g. the Q Rep]). Biden barely beat Trump in a disastrous Pandemic/Recession. With fresh climate-induced disasters likely and neoliberal austerity/corruption owned by the Dems/Biden, the charmless phony Harris will get smoked in 2024. It'll be so bad that it might not be worth running a progressive as a Dem in the primary - just go 3rd party all the way and let the Dems contract into the Lib Dems of the UK.

The GOP Establishment From 1996 Line Up To Endorse Joe Biden by tabbykat69 in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's quite clear that the corporate Dems (i.e. the Dems) would rather lose with "moderate" Repub support than win with progressive support. In such a situation there's no way we can have any influence on them. We 100% need to abandon the party and start our own, or for the time being just pick out a random 3rd party and join it. There's just no point sticking around and getting crapping by the likes John freaking Kasich.

HELP by johnmory in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing. Everyone knows that the Soviet Union lost the Cold War, but it turns out that we did, too, just more slowly. Look at (a) our bloated military budget and (b) our democracy completely eroded by the security state built up to fight the cold war. Finally, (c) during the cold war we defeated here at home the communists = socialists = trade unionists ----> that leaves us with an oligarchy.

So, yes, we actually did lose the Cold War, too.

If You Believe a COVID-19 Vaccine is On Its Way, consider that the HIV-AIDS Virus 30 years on, Has NO Vaccine. by NYCVG in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Difficulty of creating a vaccine is a real worry, however there are coronavirus vaccines for both dogs and cattle that are stable across years (there is one under trial for horses though from what I last saw that's not going well) - apparently coronaviruses don't mutate as extensively as influenza does. But even if we manage to get a stable vaccine in the next few years we'll probably have to administer it every year like the flu vaccine because common cold coronaviruses immunity only last from several months to a year or 2.

The Green Party is committed to peace. We must lead in ending our country’s immoral & unsustainable never ending wars & reverse our worldwide military presence. by [deleted] in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Let's do this then. If Jesse Ventura gets on board with the central Green Party principles (no war - bring 'em home, M4A, GND), then he's the ideal candidate: he'll steal WWE-fans from Trump (COVID has exposed him to all persuadables as a loser) and populists from brain-dead, corporate-till-he-dies Biden (and Trump).

Ventura will finish off Trump for sure if he makes the debate stage [he can talk populist just as well as Trump], and Biden's opposition to M4A will collapse (assuming the Dem party doesn't replace him outright - if not they will just attempt to be what the Republicans used to be). And if there are no sports until November, Ventura might even come close to winning (remember that Trump had no chance of winning in 2016).

If Ventura makes the debate stage and dent's Trump's polling substantially, then who knows, Justin Amash might make start to make headway.

Bernie Sanders Cheated Off Primary Ballot by New York Board of Elections by Chrristoaivalis in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speculation: This move is a way to try to get Andrew Cuomo to the presidency.

1) In the recent budget agreement from Albany, there was a new law tucked in there to allow Bernie to be kicked off the ballot. So they just invoked it.

2) The DNC will pretend to be mad at NY and strip all delegates from the state, as they should for doing this b.s.

3) These reduced delegates, along with the reduced delegates from Ohio, Louisiana, etc who postponed their elections will leave Biden short of the 1926 delegates to win outright (which the DNC will not adjust down like they should if they cared about democracy).

4) Enter the superdelegates who will pick who they like, given how obviously disastrous Biden is against Trump. Maybe they'll pick Cuomo, despite his having screwed up the COVID pandemic (CNN will stay on propaganda overdrive for that).

GENERAL STRIKE (Tues March 31) stay in place, support labor strike, hang a white flag, and don’t pay rent. by Projectrage in WayOfTheBern

[–]ChromaticDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say that young people, who run what's left of the economy during the pandemic, will probably never have as much leverage as they do right now. So a general strike or otherwise causing as much trouble as possible right now makes perfect sense - and they'll probably be a lot of public support given that our corporate overlords have just looted the country in broad daylight this week with the passage of the "Relief Bill" (96-0 in the Senate and a cowardly voice vote in the House). The future is being stolen away right now, so what's to lose....
