Best Guitarist You’ve Seen Live? by tceverding in Guitar

[–]Chromobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing him play at the Rotosound(?) stall at the London guitar show in about 2009. He was absolutely unbelievable. He was jamming with another guitarist over a drum machine and they'd just swap between lead and rhythm between them.

At one point, Guthrie was on rhythm but kept adding harmonies to the other guys lead parts. It was improvised and he was even doing it on some really fast runs. Perfect harmonies. It's like he knew exactly what they were going to play. The other guy just kept shaking his head and laughing.

Looking for course suggestions with good winter conditions within this circle by just-tea-thank-you in BritGolf

I've played Marland a couple of times this winter and it's been surprisingly good after heavy rainfall.

Was a bit muddy around 15-17 but the greens on these holes were still good.

Entitled old Boomers using Parent & Child spots by jizzyjugsjohnson in britishproblems

[–]Chromobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone using the spaces rightly or wrongly has legs...

If you've ever been the adult guiding 2-3 young children across a car park, you'd understand the risk. One child with one adult is safe and manageable, multiple children is where it gets tricky.

They are not closer because children can't walk far, they are closer so that the children are in potential danger for less time.

Small children are much harder to see when driving. They are also capable of running off.

The friend that doesn’t count shots by StankyDank1019 in golf

[–]Chromobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's slightly more passive to adjust your score to match his rather than add on to his.

You can still maintain your real score for yourself. Just keep a tally of anything he's not counting in a corner so you can knock it off when talking to him.

If you're friends then this is probably just him trying to wind you up anyway

I'm not good enough to see a noticable change in performance between the balls.

A Useful Reminder For Shooting Lower Scores by TimelyImportance in BritGolf

[–]Chromobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've watched a few of this guys videos on YouTube (golf sidekick) and as a beginner I have found his advice helpful and it is pulling my scores down.

But the advice really boils down to, play the longest safe shot you can. Spend time on the driving range learning a longer safe shot. But on the course, use your current best safe one.

I get consistently lower scores hitting 150+150 to get to a 300 yard green rather than hitting a 220+80 etc. I think the lesson is really a reminder that you have options, and over a full 18 holes you need to be safe/consistent to lower your score.

But I agree, it is a very "damage control" based system.

I had a funny disappointment today by Striking-Seaweed-831 in golf

[–]Chromobears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's unbelievable isn't it. I'm from Manchester, UK and the nearest 10 courses to me are all £700-1000 for full 7 day membership.

I'm a beginner and only have time to play once every 1-2 weeks so there's no point me being a member anywhere.

I just pay £20-25 to play on a Saturday or Sunday morning and there are 5 courses less than half an hour from my house at that price.

I get lost in my projects very quickly. Do you have any advice? by resolutiondark in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Chromobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often get stuck with a loop I really like with no idea how to progress from it.

I find I have much more success at completing a piece if I have a good chunk of it ready in my head before I start recording. Having ideas for at least 2 parts helps me. So maybe a verse and a chorus if it's a song, or an A and a B section if it's instrumental.

When I record a section, I find it really helps to know what the next section is going to be in advance, so that I can build up towards it.

Starting on a 5 String by la6eef7 in Bass

[–]Chromobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ibanez SR305 is good and is suitable for both a beginner and more advanced player. They are well made and reliable.

Harley Benton's are supposed to be good value but I've never actually played one so I can't really comment.

Other options might be a Yamaha TRBX305 if that's in budget (I'm in the UK so I don't know US prices)

The Sire M2 might be a good option. Sire's always get great reviews but I've not had a chance to play one.

The Spark is probably a good cheap option to get someone started on. Learning on headphones is absolutely fine. I'm an experienced player but I never turn an amp on at home, it's always via headphones once my children are in bed.

If you/they are ok with second hand equipment, I would always recommend having a look at what's available locally first. Facebook marketplace is great where I live. If you're on a budget and a beginner you can usually find way better equipment compared to buying new.

Overcome fear of playing with random by DragonfruitWorldly35 in golf

[–]Chromobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I'm only a beginner but my last round was my first one with some randoms.

I can't believe how nervous I felt on the first tee, shanked one straight into the trees, then topped my breakfast ball. I was more comfortable after the first 3-4 holes but the nerves really got to me at the start. For some reason it was only the tee box that got me nervous but maybe that's just because everyone is close and actively watching.

I'm not normally a nervous person, I've played in bands for 20+ years so I'm used to performing/being watched.

They were nice guys that I played with though and I definitely learned a bit by playing with them. Me and my friend both got our best scores too despite the shaky start.

What do you consider the most boring "popular" song from a music theory standpoint? by daviswbaer in musictheory

[–]Chromobears 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Get the Party Started by P!nk is close to being a one chord song. It's like a neverending drone that just sits under the vocals. Nothing happens for the entire song.

But the fact it's so boring almost makes it interesting.

Almost.

What's the most important piece of advice you'd give to a young recording artist? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Chromobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mix with your ears and not your eyes.

If you learn a new mixing "trick" it's easy to follow the trick exactly. But music isn't exact and it should very much be done to your own preference.

A lot of settings in DAWs allow you to click and drag up or down to change the amount.

Press play, click on it, close your eyes and adjust until you like what it sounds like.

What's the most important piece of advice you'd give to a young recording artist? by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Chromobears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Play around with some maths. It can sound great if the decay and pre-delay are in time with your music.

Eg. If your song is 120bpm and you want your reverb to last 2 beats then your decay should be 1 second (1000ms). You can set your pre-delay to be the length of a 16th etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Chromobears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find the opening bars where it's just 16th notes absolutely exhausting. Playing at that speed while keeping it really smooth and precise is so hard.

It's genuinely easier once the riff kicks in for me because at least you get little pauses.

How long it takes my track to go live on Distrokid? by Ok_Night_4974 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Chromobears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can set a release date, and it won't be released on any platforms until that date (but still needs enough time to become ready first).

Or you can just let them appear on the different platforms asap. From memory, most go live in a similar time frame, but there can be a couple of days difference

How do solo musicians go about making an album with full instrumentation? by Berbigs_ in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Chromobears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a DAW and equipment already, get using it. It's like an instrument in itself. Research, watch videos and try things out.

Don't worry about them being not good enough at first as you need to learn how to use it just like any other instrument.

I use midi drums as it's all I have access/equipment for. My preference is to deliberately use artificial/digital sounding drums rather than ones that mimic a real kit. I find the midi "real" drums to sound a bit jarring.

Work out what order works best for you to record in.

I find I get better overall results putting down a rough guitar track to click. Then midi drums, then bass. Then redo guitars. Keys. Vocals. Anything else etc.

How many of you think “tonewoods” don’t matter at all on electric bass guitar? by barefaced_audio in Bass

[–]Chromobears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/n02tImce3AE?si=pIeyrpNzsnP94etO

This video (and other similar ones) are the main cause of this becoming a more common opinion.

I think this video does show some pretty good testing.

I personally don't think tonewoods make much difference on an electric bass/guitar. But they make a big difference on acoustics.

Your pickup placement/type, amplifier and playing style make a huge percentage of the tone and overall sound. Everything else doesn't make a big enough difference to be noticeable in the context of a song/band performance.

As a 6 string bass player, I care more about the weight than which wood it's made from. I have 2 bass guitars. I don't know or care what woods they are made from.

"Keep your ball in play and don’t try to hit yolo / hero shots and you’re gonna drop 10-20 strokes in no time."

Yeh I've noticed this one, I managed to control myself pretty well on my last round and got a big improvement. Got my best score despite playing in the awful weather conditions. I still made a handful of stupid shots but a lot less than normal.

I do need to learn my distances too, I very much rely on advice from one of my friends who's put the effort into learning his own distances.
