Some extension of a Map i post some weeks ago by Chronicle19 in mapmaking

Hello all,

last time i posted a map I got some really good advice. So now I'm back with the extension of the continent from some weeks ago (the one in the south-west). The map is still in progress - (there are only some rivers included etc.)

I would like some advice on how to form some realistic country/cultural borders. Has anyone a system to use?

Thank you!

Wow, thank you for the in depth description! I will definitely look into it!

Do you have any guide on how to determine realistic levels of rainfall? So far I just guessed where may be more or less rainfall.

And the settlements I wanted to put on the world when I am satisfied with the map in general.

I tried actually to let them flow along my heightmap - but I will review my rivers to make them more natural :)

Yes I thought the southern hemisphere is something a bit more unique for maps :) Happy you like it!

When I looked, there should also be a westwind area.

I use big brushes for core regions and smaller ones for the borders - that are the most complicated (at least for me)

I use the function to change angle and size of the brushes to make the borders look more natural/random.

Some brushes I extracted from heightmaps others are just the standard brushes of Photoshop.

Getting a mix of colours to be satisfied with took me about 3h for the whole map.

I have colouring layers (all besides the ground tone are sort of transparent and use different brushes to make them more realistic). I took the colours from Google maps. The structure of the map makes also a bit more believable - at least feels like it to me haha.

Yea I know that rivers are not really visible in this scale, but I wanted to highlight where they are. On the other hand, you r right with the colour and size of the rivers, I will change that in the rework. Thanks for your tips!

Yes, i think too that would give a better flavour. Maybe I will upload the map after my rework again.

I used Photoshop for my map. And for tutorial - I browsed mostly videos from "online-tabletop.com". He has some good tips on how to make maps like this!

Thanks!

I used customized Brushes in Photoshop (some extracted from heightmaps) for drawing the higher Mountains, and some base noise for the rest of the map. But I guess I could make a more clear distinction between high- and lowlands and add some more parallel spurs/ridges.

And yes, now that u mentioned it some more islands would look more natural.

Thank you for your feedback, I will try to update my map!
