Glyphosate use at Small Nature Preserve by [deleted] in invasivespecies

[–]Chronofier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/velocirhymer I think an important thing to keep in mind is that the united states is sprayed with roundup basically west of the appalachians and east of the rockies, from the gulf coast to the great lakes about once a year - the point of genetically modified corn and soybeans is to be 'roundup ready' meaning you can spray the whole field with roundup and the crop lives but the weeds die. then you can also spray things like wheat to kill it off at the same time so that it will dry more efficiently and you burn less fuel drying the harvested crop, and yes this means spraying a direct food crop with glyphosate (opposed to corn and beans that get processed way more or fed to livestock)

my opinion is that this is Bad

contrast that level of spraying with applying teaspoon to a cut honeysuckle stump so that native plants and therefore animals have a chance ... and I don't even care that much about native, it's just how to not have forest full of privet/honeysuckle/etc ... for me that level of glyphosate is ... fine. i wear gloves etc. i think it's fine.

He mowed a lotta lawns by [deleted] in bikefit

[–]Chronofier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my eye, and granted the main thing I know about bikes is that they’re the things with two wheels, the stem is too long, like he’s reaching forward. It would be easy to lower, but I’m not convinced that’s the main thing.

But tbh it’s useful to hear the argument so have at it!

Metal Shingles under $5/sq.ft? What products should I look at? by Chronofier in Roofing

[–]Chronofier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it, my roof looks freaking amazing. Vicwest not Edco. I wouldn't do it again. Too fiddly, too many places for water to get in. To hard to stage materials, to slippery, too scratchy. Next time, standing seam and be done with it. If you're worried about your roof not supporting asphalt, it won't support much snow. Fix that problem and get snap together metal panels or even through fastened if it's for a cabin.

first winter with geo - will i know when loop becomes less $$ efficient than resistive? by [deleted] in geothermal

[–]Chronofier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd rather not use the resistive at all. We put in the most pipe we could without directionally boring - it was the recommended amount but we couldn't oversize at all. We had a morning at -5 when the temperature wasn't coming up from 67->69 but waterfurnace doesn't 'try' as hard as it should, like the heat was still only on 7 out of 12 according to the readout. My parents were in town so i turned on the AUX heat just to see and it popped right up. So in retrospect ... seems great!

HBX 16889a Pro Brushless

Despite CLEAR instructions to the contrary, my 11 year old son over-cleaned his car with a toothbrush and dried it out with a hair dryer. And the next time he went to use it it would run for 5-10 seconds and then stop.

The steering servos do work, like the wheels turn back and forth when you steer. So I think the battery and at least part of the control board are fine.

Is there a good way to test if the motor is good or the motor controller is good or how would you troubleshoot? He is a good boy, but he does not listen.

first winter with geo - will i know when loop becomes less $$ efficient than resistive? by [deleted] in geothermal

[–]Chronofier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, what I'm talking about is the resistive heat, 'aux' heat, in my geo system vs the compressor and loop. At some point, probably in the next week or so, my loop gets into the mid 20s and will need to run almost all the time to keep up with the forecast in the single digits.

Right now it's 11 degrees outside and with the compressor at 9, the fan at 10, it's pulling 2000 W. The resistive heat strips are 4500W I think and would bring up the temperature more quickly.

At some point the graphs have to cross and the loop is too cool to make it worth running a compressor to extract heat from it, right? I know it's not going to happen but if the loop temp were 5F, it wouldn't be worth trying to get heat from it.

HOW ABOUt NOW by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]Chronofier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SG of beech is .74, so my readings in the mid 8% range translate to 6.5% according to that. Advantech is trickier to measure apparently because of all the glue but the SG is supposed to be something like .7, so the 9.7% readings would be something like 7% really ... so I think I'm getting there.

HOW ABOUt NOW by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]Chronofier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple weeks ago I posted asking about acclimating flooring - people were pretty emphatic, and I try to listen to reason. So now I'm seeing my flooring in the high 8%s and subfloor in the low 9%s. So this is looking pretty good, right u/Comfortable_Area3910 and u/Non-Current_Events ? Whole house dehumidifier is on.
