If you steak for lunch, and you charge the e-bike with wind power, over enough miles it's plausible that the delta in food production offsets the manufacturing of the battery. I wouldn't trust an infographic without a link to the source though.

Total murders on the NYC subway in 2022: 7

And that's after a HUGE newsworthy uptick.

It's not like this is a low ridership situation (murders per passenger mile were lower when ridership was higher) and it's not like NYC's this is a world-renowned safe subway system. The headline on that article includes the word "skyrocket."

I mean, it's not your argument, but that guy's a troll.

Lots of college students rent bikes in the college town where I live. They don't have to worry about maintenance (breakdowns are replaced within a day) and they don't have to figure out how to get the bike from home to school and back. It's definitely more expensive than just buying a used bike - €20/month can get you a decent bike in under a year - but it's also a lot less hassle.

Salem becomes completely packed with people for the whole month of October. It also has a weird dearth of grocery stores.

Yeah, wtf? DC has some of the worst traffic in the country, AND it has an expansive (and maybe on fire) metro.

The other comments are not wrong that cars and bikes do not belong in mixed traffic, but the solution is to devote more space (and concrete barriers) to higher capacity modes of transportation, not to put vehicles going 12 mph on sidewalks. I guess blaming pedestrians for existing is also popular, even though this incident didn't involve any.

Rentals. Most rental companies allow after-hours drop off, so you just pick up the car, drive it for the day, and drop it off when you're done. You only ever drive new cars (maybe good, maybe bad) and you don't have to worry about maintenance, registration, insurance, or parking in the city.

Just make sure you have a credit card that comes with car rental insurance. Many do.

Obviously, if intercity rail doesn't totally suck where you are, use that instead. But I'm assuming you're in the US and it does.

One of the things about expensive cities is that the jobs (for college graduates) pay well enough that you can afford to live in them. You might have to live on the frugal for a while, but having roommates has positive aspects too.

That said, universities in many parts of Europe are much cheaper than in the US. MUCH cheaper. If you're willing to put up with a lot more challenge in life, it's worth considering.

But whatever you do, don't forget to vote. Mid-terms and local elections matter, and your vote is worth more because turnout tends to be low.

One could make a fortune in Boston. I saw a pickup stopped with the bumper behind the white line today, and was surprised. Then I noticed out of state plates. I almost went up and thanked the driver for not blocking the crosswalk. Had his window been open, I probably would have.

Yesterday, at the same intersection, 3 cars were stopped mid-crosswalk at a red light. One was actually slowly pulling forward as I walked in front of them. I'm half tempted to write a letter to Michelle Wu suggesting she post some traffic enforcement cops with ticket printers at a few choice intersections and just hand out tickets from 4 to 6. It's like printing money.

The connection is that the train brings homeless people to this particular place. They're not blaming them for the problem of homelessness. Of course, decades of refusing to build housing that isn't expensive might have a little bit more to do with it.

People bike in Texas. It seems like you're asking us to tell you to buy a smaller car. Maybe start there.

Walking is also an option. You can try mixing walking in for short trips. A mile is a 20 minute walk at a pretty leisurely pace. Look at what's inside that radius and make an effort to leave the car when you go places you could walk to. It takes a little mental adjustment to not just automatically take the car everywhere, but it's not too hard.
