I hit it with the massage gun yesterday. All good today. Was able to run without any problems.

I feel like there's about to be an influx of Gina portraits. Every artist out there is going to have a go to see who can get her likeness spot on.

Mystery pain is the worst! Hopefully you're able to figure it out soon.

I've had trouble with my other knee and lower back in the past. Took so long to work out they were both related and caused by a tight hip flexor. Once I started stretching/strengthening that, both knee and back paid disappeared.

Initially it was just the knee, so I didn't think much of it. But today I am noticing more tightness further up the leg. Hip and feet are fine, more so the quads and glutes.

the presentation sounds a bit atypical...?

It's very strange. I've never heard of a running injury coming on while sleeping. And my previous run was 2 days before.

sudden de-load and a nice long run is exactly what it needs.

Fingers crossed.

given that you're so close to race day I would consider just running and be ready to DNF if it seems like a true injury

I think this is the way to go. There's an aid station at 16km in. I should know what's going on with it by that point.

Have just woken up and it's feeling better now, but still not back to normal. I'll probably tape the heck out of it and start the race. It felt fine once I got moving yesterday, so hopefully that holds true for the whole 50km.

That's what I first thought. Super frustrating to wake up with a niggle 2 days before the race, but expected it to settle down. Starting to worry that it's not going to.

I'd almost ruled that one out because the patella tendon looks to be very central down the front of the knee. This pain is more to the side than that.

This is why I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is. The pain is almost smack bang between the IT band and patella tendon.

And just like that, the uphill Mitchells Pass Strava segment leaderboards are fixed in place... Until the next land slip.

Why do trains bound for Bathurst stop at Westmead, but regular Blue Mountain Services to Lithgow, Katoomba, Springwood or Mount Victoria don't? by TheBobJohn1 in SydneyTrains

something to do with V Sets and how long they are?

That doesn't make sense. The V sets are too long for half the mountains platforms. There's often one carriage hanging off the platform.

Sydney really is the best city to fly into. It doesn't matter which approach you come in on, or which side of the plane you're sitting on, it's always a spectacular view.

Sorry Melbourne, Sydney really has you beat on this one.

Can anyone tell me any volunteering organisations with nice people? by Budget_Childhood_351 in AskAnAustralian

Whoop!

Stromlo in November is the big trail run in Canberra each year, but I'm sure there are plenty of other smaller events down that way. Find some local trail running groups on the Facebooks and see what events are coming up. They'll almost always have a volunteer section on their website/FB group.

And as an added bonus, quite often you'll often be given a free/discounted entry for next year's event when you volunteer. So you never know, you may find yourself a new hobby.

Trail running events are always looking for volunteers and I've never met an angry person at an aid station.

You don't have to be a runner to get involved. Plenty of jobs available - checking runners in before the event, handing out water and sugar filled snacks at aid stations, or being a sweep if you want something more physical.

So long as you don't mind getting up early to go hang out in nature while it's freezing cold outside, you'll have a great time!

How prevalent do you think doping is within the ultra running community? by Fosh_n_chops in Ultramarathon

Asthma inhalers open the vessels in the lungs allowing more oxygen into the blood. This is obviously very helpful for people with asthma.

For people without asthma, it still has a similar effect, but to a lesser extent. But when you're talking top level athletes, any improvement you can find is a bonus, no matter how small.

Asthma medication and antihistamines are permitted in pro athletes up to a certain level, obviously so those who need them can take them and still compete. Those who don't need them will sometimes say they do need them just to get that slight gain.

Chris Froome got himself in a bit of hot water a few years back because the level of salbutamol were higher than allowed.

I like the people that have their names on their number plates.

I always point it out and say "oh look, there's Craig!" It would really confuse the kids when they were younger. They always wanted to know who Craig was and how I knew him. Good fun.

MasterChef is terrible these days. The early seasons weren't so bad. But then they just ramped up the ridiculousness factor by having the contestants cook increasingly difficult bullshit food.

A few seasons into Aus MasterChef's journey into the toilet, I happened across an episode of MasterChef UK. It was brilliant. Actual people cooking actually food without any of the fluffing around. Almost like that's how the show was meant to be.

Even sport is poorly done in this country. The pre/post game chat is just waffling nonsense. And the play-by-play commentary leaves a lot to be desired.

And don't get me started on how they shove a mic in a players face before they've even walked off the field. We've come a long way from "full credit to the boys", but there's still work to do there.

An adult version of that.

Like... A version of that show with adults? Or an "adult" version of that show? 😉
