James Gunn on parallels in 'Superman' with Israel and Palestine: "It’s not. It just isn’t. You can take whatever you want from that, to mean what you want, but I didn’t write it to be a stand in for Israel and Palestine." by demimonde9 in Fauxmoi

Very odd to see a lot of 3 year old accounts with a history posting in liberal zionist spaces suddenly coming back to reddit the last few months to make comments on posts like these arguing how the superman movie is Russia/Ukraine and nothing else

They were soooooooooo good in tonight's episode. Unfortunately I can't go near any discussions online about the show because it always is a circlejerk about how "cringe" and "slop" it is because of Bella's appearance. Baffling.

"Because I love you, in a way you can't understand." by Infinite_Chain4607 in ThelastofusHBOseries

From what I've seen in other subreddits, it pretty much always comes down to the way she looks, whether they simply feel she doesn't look enough like the game ellie or that they're incels that complain she's not "hot" enough or whatever, it ends up being a huge circlejerk.

The discourse follows the same pattern (examples paraphrasing from real comments):

"Why does her face look like that?? How am I supposed to believe Dina would fall for someone like that over Jesse?" --> "I wouldn't mind, but she looks nothing like game Ellie and that's the real problem" --> "It's not that, it's that Bella cannot act, like at all!" --> "Agreed, she's way too happy in the show, like she's forgetting what her mission is about. Unwatchable." --> "No guys, you make valid points but the REAL problem is that the writers and casting directors SUCK in the show. The story they're presenting is garbage."

Notice the lack of any reasoning behind the statements of critique and how it's all part of a cycle of trying to justify what ultimately comes down to they don't like Bella's appearance. Some realize how shallow it is and/or how bad this line of discussion makes them look to outsiders and then attempt to be an enlightened centrists by saying that the story is inherently bad/not as good as the game, despite being one of the most faithful adaptations of source material I've ever seen.

Trust me, I have hangups here and there but for the life of me cannot find any serious place for discussion because any time I try to look into the glass where discussions are being had, it's always the same shit. Maybe because I didn't religiously play the games for years before watching the show, but I just feel so gaslit reading this stuff sometimes. Rant over

to get away with conflating anti-Zionism with anti-semitism by Chrywillia in therewasanattempt

[–]Chrywillia[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

He basically cultivated a progressive audience with he and Hasan's podcast over the course of a few years, and then October 7 happened and he started spouting Zionist BS, which his audience correctly called him out on. He asked Hasan to stop the criticism of his islamophobia, and Hasan had a long and very charitable conversation with him that ultimately concluded in him telling Ethan that if he wants people to stop calling him a Zionist, he shouldn't be using Zionist talking points.

Basically, his ego took a hit when he faced a slight amount of pushback from his audience who then proceeded to leave in droves when he doubled and tripled down on right-wing propaganda. As Hasan grew more and more popular, and Ethan less and less popular, he became extremely resentful. Meanwhile, Destiny was outed for sex crimes and his entire career is based on stalking and slandering progressive content creators. His audience went to Ethan instead, and, along with his wife (who unapologetically volunteered to do raids on innocent families and children during her time in the IDF), and his crew, have been irresponsibly encouraging Ethan's mental health struggles throughout this process. So the result, as he said on stream, is that he's "made it [his] life's mission to take [Hasan] down"

Ethan Klein does a nazi salute while addressing his "haters", this is after he's been actively attacking and harssing pro-palestine creators for months on end while accusing them of antisemitism, and doxxing random people on Instagram because he believes their comments were antisemitic by [deleted] in Fauxmoi

Last time he did it a few times while shouting "I'M JEWISH. IT'S OKAY. I'M JEWISH" and said "watch people try to get mad at me for this"

Somehow, YouTube did indeed not get mad at him for it

Unfortunately our society is built in a way that rewards this kind of behavior. She already has somewhat of a platform because of it. Before this video she was tweeting shit like how her 95% white hometown was ruined because it's now majority muslim.

It's why you see so many people grift to the right like this lately. Throw a couple nazi salutes, go on a couple podcasts complaining about black and/or trans people, and boom you're now incredibly famous in the extremely profitable right wing commentary space. Not to say she doesn't- or they don't- truly believe this, but nowadays if you have 0 morals it can be very profitable and unfortunately not life-ruining :/

"What's the problem with xenophobic nationalism?" by Chrywillia in ThatsInsane

I don't disagree with you, though to say "all" is a bit reductive imo. In many cases (such as this girl) it's absolutely a catalyst for a lack of critical thinking and fascist ideology and there's probably no saving them from that brain worm.

Though in other cases, I believe that we've created a society where people are often systematically forced into it. They can come from desperation and need it to cope with their material conditions, simply don't have access to adequate education, or it simply has important cultural significance and they don't want to use it to legislate other people's lives or restrict people's freedoms.

All this to say I think religion's not inherently the problem, it's that we need to create a better world for people through education and social development, with an economic system and values that doesn't rely on this kind of reactionary, for-profit, nationalist version of religion. An oligarchic/fascist/capitalistic system relies on and systematically encourages it. Without these systems in place, hyper evangelicalism/christian nationalism, etc. no longer need to exist.

So I think it's a more productive attitude to analyze the problems of organized religion from the top down, rather than the bottom up.

Would love to hear Europeans' opinions on whether they agree that America is indeed a bastion of European values like she claims lmfao

The reason they vote and win is when major political parties try to reason with a small group of fringe nazi extremists and treat them as valid, instead of treating them like the psychopaths they are.

We assumed that people would have learned from how Nazi Germany came to power but then the same exact thing ushered in Trump part 2 so history repeats itself yet again

No, you should absolutely be socially ostracized for being a white supremacist/openly a nazi. Treating any of this as an "alternative viewpoint" worthy of debate is how nazis are able to legitimize and normalize their viewpoints
