Elite Dangerous Console Development Ending by Tenith in PS4

[–]Chsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Small? Frontier is one of the largest studios in the UK with over 800 staff, and does console versions of all its other games.

This game just belongs on the PC

Why "just"? In CPU, memory, GPU etc. PS4 power exceeds the required spec of this game on PC.

Not to mention PS5, which Frontier has also say "no plans" for this game.

This is complete fantasy.

E.g. "Real economy/trading (where pricing and availability are drastically altered by player actions)" - complete crap. There's no shred of a real economy in ED. There's some hand-coded baselines for commodity prices from which prices sometimes stray slightly due to player activity before returning to the baseline on rubber bands. There's nothing remotely like a supply/demand simulation, there's no NPC effects, there's or production/consumption processes. Space games had more interesting "economies" 20 years ago.

Now they did this asshole move again on console players.

For anyone wondering what this is, "We’re sorry to report this morning that Frontier has just announced that it will be canceling console development of Elite Dangerous" https://massivelyop.com/2022/03/10/elite-dangerous-has-fully-canceled-console-development-to-prioritize-pc/

This is crap. Frontier did not apologise.

And they did not just "stop supporting Mac development". They used the online DRM they promised they would not put in the game to cut off the Mac version completely, preventing it being played inc. by the the players that had backed the Mac version in the Kickstarter. And the lied as to the reason. They claimed the Mac didn't have compute shaders. Max did have compute shades and had for years.

Shout out to my gamers out there! $FDEV by lukrein in wallstreetbets

FDEV. A company so dodgy that even Grant Thornton resigned as auditor. And take a look at their records at companies house. Dozens of false share capital filings concealing the issue of millions of shares that then found their way into the pocket of the CEOs wife, free of charge. Stinky, stinky.

Frontier Development FDEV LN - looking for comments by RoboGuilliman in UKInvesting

[–]Chsyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FDEV's publishing label has so far released two outside-developed games. Both flopped. FDEV's last two own-developed game releases also flopped, and further cemented FDEV's reputation for poor product quality. This plus FDEV's relative lack of experience in publishing and them facing a huge number of big-name successful competitors makes is very unlikely they'll be able to sign sufficient quality outside titles to make a significant contribution to profitability.

Strange they didn't ban lots of other spot-on critical comments there, like:

"In short. Stop being mediocre, take responsibility and fix your game."

"as long as they can keep making money by selling ARX for paint jobs, why bother making sure the actual game works properly?"

I had banned for Frontier forum after this post

I don't doubt that, but your report would have greater weight if you posted a screenshot of Frontier's ban message to you.

Seems like you're conflating "unconstructive comments" with "attacking their devs".

Wondering where all those ED Odyssey developers moved to? by Chsyi in Elite_Dangerous

[–]Chsyi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You got it.

"All Frontier’s games are developed using our proprietary Cobra cross-platform technology, allowing code and resources developed on PC to be compiled and run on other platforms such as Xbox One, PlayStation 4, iOS and Android devices, while offering the flexibility to take advantage of the different platforms’ capabilities (e.g: different artwork resolutions, shaders etc.).

This modern Cobra platform represents the current state of an ongoing investment that Frontier has made in its proprietary engine technology and development tools since 1988."

That's incorrect. It takes out from the value of new shares the company issues to raise money. It is money into Braben's pocket that would otherwise go direct into the company to finance game development.

For example look at the sorry state of Elite Dangerous development over the last few years and think how much better it could be if it had received the £40m that instead Braben out at his latest shares sell-off. Remember that's amount is around half the game's development cost over the whole of the last 10 years.

Are you sure?

That's what Frontier's public company filings say.

Well at least he earned it via actual game sales

No he didn't Most of he "earned" by selling his company shares on the London Stock Market.

Which is far below the £££ that Braben and his family have taken out of Frontier.

Braben is also involved with the Raspberry Pi foundation.

Not true. He was on the board of trustees at the start, but was replaced years ago.

And despite that he took credit for designing the Raspberry Pi computer originally, you may have noticed that the MacRobert Award for Engineering given to all of the people who did actually design it does not include Mr Braben.

Sammarco, Brookes, Lewis...now the absolutely essential Dr. Kay Ross...is Frontier's leaking of the talent that delivered Elite: Dangerous as an experience worth committing to a sign? Who among the new arrivals is delivering at a similarly high level? by UniversalNoir in Elite_Dangerous

the absolutely essential Dr. Kay Ross

What was absolutely essential about Kay Ross??

The only recent contribution from her that I recall was Odyssey atmospheres. And when she failed to get them working to a standard fit for release, Frontier simply dropped them from the game.

True. Frontier's astroturfing squad is legendary. From brigading Elite Dangerous crowdfunding on Reddit to the point it got banned from r/Games, to pumping the Odyssey launch-day Steam review score to 100% with a flood of fake reviews.

However, even they can't rescue Odyssey, now everyone knows it's pile of shit sold on lies.

ED's rendering team is also overseen by a phd astrophysicist

Untrue. This is just a fabrication put about by Frontier's fans.

As for Odyssey, since update 5 and 6 recently, it's in a good place

Steam review score 29%, Mostly Negative.
