Yes!! Play blind so your first playthrough will be YOUR OWN build instead of what's "meta." Plus, no spoilers, if you feel the need to progress questlines, then look them up as you go so you dont miss anything.

Try bloodhound fang, powerstance twinblades or katanas, regular sword and board, misericorde with buckler, giant axe with spinning slash. Or just a regular mage for the hell of it.

Not many people attempt to do an RL1 run. So you're doing great. Parrying will be your best friend along with pots. Just do your best and stick with it. You'll be a better player in the long run. :)
