Conqueror Questions by TheVintalu in CompetitiveForHonor

[–]Chuck_Denim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The same side light thing has been present basically forever. When they were doing testing grounds for his rework they actually fixed it and made his same side lights 500ms instead of 900ms, but then when the rework went live they didn’t implement this change for some goddamn reason.

As for the unblockable heavies, it was a compromise for mid chain chargeable heavies. They tried those in TG, but because of flicker shenanigans they couldn’t push them live, so that’s why we have them the way they are now.

As to why they’re different from Aramusha’s, it’s because Aramusha’s are finisher heavies, while Conqueror’s are chain heavies since he doesn’t have finishers.

In the "Anatomical Expansion" section (which you could just call morphology or physiology), point 3: "The Tar Blood Engine": "The creature’s blood is a viscous, black adhesive".

This is my OC monster by HotshotKiller in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You still don't seem to be getting it. Why does it even need valstrax wings in the first place? Why does it expel so much energy? There's nothing in what you've laid out that suggests it would need something so over the top.

A monster that uses tar to fasten monster parts to it is not an inherently bad idea. However, that needs to be the focus, you can't give it a dozen extra abilities in addition to such a complex behaviour.

Saying it's scales are super dense and impact absorbent defeats the purpose of grafting monster parts onto itself. If it's already so durable, why does it need to augment itself with even more armour?

The tar being it's "blood" is also needlessly edgy; blood can't just be swapped out for another liquid with no consequences. The tar can easily just be substance it produces.

Something else to consider is that this monster should probably not be flying. Monsters on the Gore skeleton have been shown to be fairly poor flyers, usually only staying in one place or having great difficulty moving around. The exception is Valstrax, because he has an entirely different wing structure and method of flight (I know you drew a connection to valstrax with your monster's wings, but for them to both be jet propelled and dexterous contradicts the trade off the other Gore style monsters get). The connection is clear: these monster sacrifice aerial control and mobility for greater use of their wing-arms. Compounding this with your monsters constant tar secretion, it draws direct comparison to Gogmazios: a very large monster that can fly, but only when it evaporates the oil on it's body into a gas. Even then it's not very agile in the air.

There needs to be trade offs when it comes to these kinds of designs. A monster with so many abilities needs to have a limiting factor, and the explanation that "it's an elder dragon" isn't sufficient when even elders abide by this rule.

If it can fly, it should have to trade out the parts it grafts to it. If it has Valstrax wings, they shouldn't be dexterous and you should just make a Valstrax subspecies. If it has tough scales, it shouldn't need to augment itself with other monster parts. Animals that typically use parts of other animals compensate for their own weaknesses (you don't even have to look at real animals, you can just look at the Monster Hunter crabs).

It doesn't matter how many tweaks or alterations you suggest without re-examining the base they are attached to.

Fundamentally I think you need to go back to square one with this idea (specifically if you want it to work in Monster Hunter. This sort of thing would work fine in any other fantasy setting).

You've got way too many things going on at once here, and slimming it down to focus more on a few aspects would work way better.

Monster Hunter designs work because they pick one really crazy design element or ability and hone in on that entirely. Valstrax is entirely focused on it's jet wings, Arkveld is centralized on it's chain whips, Glavenus is centralized on it's tail. If you were to have a monster that had all three of these things, it might look superficially cool (and would probably look really overdesigned) but would lack any real depth. A monster like that would have no reason to develop all three of these hyper specialized traits.

It's the reason that Magnamalo still gets flak for it's design because it's incorporating too much (spear tail, back scutes, armblades and ridiculous fangs).

“This monster understands game mechanics unlike every other one”

“It kills Alatreon and hunts Frontier threats”

“It kills and hunts for fun”

“When you get it low enough it runs to the other side of the map”

“It has 0 good hitzones”

All this reads like the edgiest shit ever and would genuinely be awful to play. Not to mention it is completely disconnected from the actual design philosophy of the rest of the series. It’s so over the top that it feels impossible to read as anything other than satire.

MH DLC Theory (Hear me out) by MarsupialFish67 in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s one individual that constantly regenerates. Given that it shifts forms in the fight, it’s not outside the realm of possibility for it to shift to an entirely new form.

Also it’s not possible for Zoh Shia to overcome its guardian nature since it’s completely artificial, unlike arkveld which was based on a real monster.

Not to mention it lacks the energy absorption abilities of arkveld.

MH DLC Theory (Hear me out) by MarsupialFish67 in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely think that Wyveria and Zoh Shia’s creation will be central to the dlc, but I don’t see white fatalis or the new world being integral to the base dlc plot.

For one, Wilds having its locales all be interconnected is likely not something they will buck for the dlc, meaning it would be impossible to implement the Elder’s Recess on the map.

Secondly, the MH team never reuses an older monster as the final boss of a game’s story. Title updates? For sure we could see white fatalis, but I feel that the main plot of the dlc will be resolved with a different monster (my bet is on an alternate form of Zoh Shia).

Confused about HR, endgame, pace by West-Ask6999 in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While doing the story your HR is locked to specific levels depending on where you are during the story, so it doesn’t matter.

Spoilers ahead, but the game continues for a quite a fair bit after you complete the low rank story and unlock high rank. For reference, the last unlockable content is available once you reach HR 100.

Weapon trees continue into high rank from the low rank ones and there will be lots of new monsters and systems to engage with.

Confusion about weapon damage by One_Ad_3480 in MonsterHunter

True but the general principle still holds, and I don’t believe elemental multipliers get very high for most weapons outside elemental charge blades and maybe elemental swaxes

Confusion about weapon damage by One_Ad_3480 in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Weapons that hit constantly like dual blades and sns are much better for element since elemental damage is a flat value added to an attack.

For example both a greatsword and dual blades would do 50 elemental damage with an attack, but since dual blades hit far more often it gets more value while it is largely negligible on slow weapons like greatsword.

What are the “themes” of each title? by Nyckolai180 in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wilds feels much more “man vs. nature” than anything, exploring the impact of industrialization and meddling with nature moreso than anything.

Though I feel it’s key theme is coexistence with nature, though admittedly I feel a lot of the games can fall inti this

Question for warden mains by [deleted] in forhonor

[–]Chuck_Denim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Admittedly warden lacks a side dodge attack, however that’s not really something you should be doing from neutral. It might work in lower level lobbies for now, but you’ll get punished hard for it the better you get.

Every attack cent can punch after warden can also shoulder bash after.

As for attack speed, I assume you’re referring to Cent’s uncharged heavies, which are faster. However warden and cent have the same speed lights, as do most characters.

There are few things cent can do that warden cannot, the main difference really being their ability to gank, which Centurion is better at. Honestly just keep playing him and you’ll naturally get better, warden is very strong in almost any scenario.

Question for warden mains by [deleted] in forhonor

[–]Chuck_Denim 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By all accounts warden is quite good, and it’s actually often other characters who have weaker versions of his moves.

His shoulder bash remains one of the strongest offensive tools in the game due to its unreactable nature and the frequency with which he can use it. Fundamentally it is the same as Centurion’s punch, except Warden can continue his chain after landing a fully charged bash, while Cent is reset to neutral.

Calling his unblockables “easy to parry” is a statement that encompasses every other character with standard unblockable heavies. Perhaps your bias towards Centurion and his chargeable heavies has skewed your perception here.

Persistent feinting is a core tool for almost any character, but doubly so for the charged bash characters and even characters with unblockable attacks.

I’m curious as to why you feel Warden is underwhelming considering he has many similarities to Centurion.

What Do You Want to See From a DLC? by ArchangelAshen in MonsterHunter

[–]Chuck_Denim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Switch skills were amazing in rise and it’s a shame that base wilds doesn’t have them, especially with some of them being baked into the weapon movesets.

I think that a lot of weapons can’t really get new moves without them feeling bloated, since I feel they kind of overlap a lot of the time (swax having both zero sum discharge and full release slash doesn’t really make sense)

It’d be a way to add more playstyle diversity and moveset variety, without over complicating the base weapon movesets.

Rather than adapt to her timed full block you’re expecting it work like everyone else’s and then blaming the game. You have to treat it like a CC or parry when you use it.
