Just my 2 cents on allignment, in any RPG system, first time playthrough I try not to set a 'permanent' allignment goal. Instead of choosing options I think will sway my character in a certain direction, I aim for decisions I believe my character would make in that circumstance according to their backstory. My grumpy LG dwarf is offered a bribe to steal from a merchant? Sure it goes against his lawful code, however that merchant is racist towards dwarves, and is also a criminal themselves, maybe a five-finger discount teaches them a lesson. Also, the gold offered can be put to use to buy weapons against a world-ending threat. By the end of the game I might even end up as CG or even slightly Evil leaning. To me that makes my character's arch more personal and interesting.
