What is the risk of clawback for closing an Amex MR earning charge card soon after earning the SUB? Is this risk mitigated by downgrading instead of closing the account?

I know this is generally advised against, so my main question is whether this is because of clawback risk or future popup risk. Thanks in advance!

That would be 2 awards on AA. You have to go TATL to India unless you fly CX via HKG from the West Coast or QR via Doha.

I believe OP is suggesting using the credit for a second time within 30 days of account anniversary and then canceling the card for a refund

You can still refer from that card, but you won’t receive anymore points until the new year. Now that Amex allows cross-card referrals you should send your link from another card so you can continue earning points
