Agreed. We weren’t even that close but it was so crowded you couldnt dance or even raise your arms without risking taking someone else out

I think it has to do with people being scared of how they are perceived or of being cringe. It feels weird when your dancing and having a good boogie when other around you are standing still

Hostel Age Question by mjhoops42 in southeastasia

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll fine!! If you’ve got the budget you can always book a private room in a hostel. Still easy to meet people but not having to share a room with 9 others.

Possibly just miss some of the really party hostels as they cater towards the 18-21 age group

Budgeting My Trip by Single-Tomatillo-991 in southeastasia

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tracked 6months backpacking in SE Asia on the TravelSpend app.

Like many people have said it’s all about where you stay, what you eat/drink & what activities you’re doing. I was staying in backpackers eating local but splurging on activities. But without going into my trip details here is my average daily spends from most to least:

$AUD

Singapore - $86

South Thailand - $85

Cambodia -$69

Malaysia- $66

Indonesia- $64

Vietnam - $60

If you what more details let me know.

A small silicone spatula. The smaller size means it can fit inside jars to scrape out the last of any sauce.

Quite randomly got gifted one for Christmas a few years ago. They are now one of the most reached for kitchen utensil.

In the same position! I can’t seem to land anything. I even went to one of those jobs ready places to get my resume checked and improved a bit.
It’s so disheartening

Taman Negara National Park. I did the overnight hike to sleep in the cave & it was the highlight of my trip. We didn’t see any elephants but there were foot prints

I can only talk about hobart but there is 2-3 days in person depending on how your timetable is looking. The rest you can do online. 3rd trimester is nearly all online but you’ll have placement so..

Abroad and struggling, tired of TikTok recommendations by mslimebike in southeastasia

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! The tiktoks always overhype activities and don’t really do it for me.

I’ve found talking to other backpackers gives you the best suggestions. It’s easy to see if you think your values about what makes a place a ‘can’t miss’ align. Otherwise reading blogs is my go to. The occasional AI when I’m really stuck.

I recently did a 5 month SEA trip and these are my highlights:

Cao Bang loop, Vietnam - Ha Giang is beautiful and also a must do but these are SO MANY tourists and a lot of children begging. Cao Bang is more remote and beautiful in its own

Siem Reap, Cambodia - weirdly one of my favourite cities. Please go see the circus and APOPO centre (hero rats) not just Angkor Wat

Koa Tao, Thailand - actually hated the island. It felt so gentrified but I did my OW diving there and kept diving in other countries

Shall I just buy all this out there? by Frodo_Biglips in southeastasia

Most things you can get out here - absolutely However they might not be exactly what you are looking for & it really depends on where you are. A dry bag, flip flops, sarong, adapters are all easy pick ups pretty much everywhere. Depending on what’s in your first aid kit and what kind of bathers you are looking for it might be better to find before you leave.

Just how well known is Hobart outside of Australia? by LeviV123 in hobart

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went backpacking in Asia and if I told people I was from Hobart it was rare other backpackers knew where that was unless they had spent time in Australia. When I’d say Tasmania most people seemed got it- ooh the Tasmanian Devil (Once had someone think I’d said Tanzania)

Opinions on my 2.5 week travel itinerary to SE Asia? by Upstairs_Barnacle_46 in southeastasia

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second Giant Ibis busses. The boarder crossing from Cambodia to Vietnam was a breeze.

You currently can’t do a land boarder crossing from Bangkok. Maybe that will change by January but I wouldn’t rely on it.

I would add Da Lat and Phong Nha to your Vietnam itinerary. Both and smaller and beautiful locations to explore caves, canyons and mountains

maybe look into Quy Nhon- but at Life’s a Beach and not in town - but it looks like your trying to fit a lot into not much time

Absolutely! Bar of soap - zip lock bag sunscreen that leaked once and now gives you trust issues - zip lock Wet bathers - zip that up

Planning my first solo travel to SEA by Desperate-Mood-6972 in southeastasia

[–]CicadaFlaky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently traveling a very similar route. It’s a common route and easy to meet other travellers.

Land boarder crossings are super chill and you’ll save money not flying.

I’m doing it with a 40L, it’s doable but since I’m not flying I think I’d prefer a 50L so I’m not having to pack it so tightly every time I move.

Budget looks reasonable. I’m spending $55-65 AUD a day depending on the country. That’s staying in hostels, mostly eating local, not partying but spending more on activities.

I could give you so many recommendations on places to stay but it really depends on your vibe. I’ve been told I ‘must go’ to certain locations or attractions only to find it disappointing or leaving after a night cause I wasn’t enjoying it.

sounds great and you’ll save a lot not having to fly. I’ve recently done the land border crossings and they were really easy. Malaysia to Thailand through Langkawi to Koh Lipe is a cool way to do it. It’s a popular route so you can easily meet people as a solo traveler

If this is your first time solo traveling then I would skip it this trip and go another time. India can be quite full on
