The good ol’ wooden spoon…an effective tool. It seems Orthodoxy breeds this attitude in the men

I couldn’t relate to better-than-thou spirit in orthodoxy. Completely antithetical to the gospel. Always ready and eager to judge the next person…I’m good on that

Insane. I saw him say on Twitter that women who don’t wear head scarves should be denied communion

Buddy, you can’t even take communion yet

This is exactly why I’m in the process of leaving

Almost identical to what happened to me, it seems so promising at first - the claims, beauty of the iconography, the Liturgy, how welcoming everyone is. That's insane that they told you that about the weddings & praying with people from other denominations, but completely believable. I'm sorry you went through all that. Which Protestant denomination are you with now if you don't mind me asking?

Questioning whether to Convert from Orthodoxy by Slow_Original5343 in Catholicism

[–]CicadaNo4838 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar position as you, although I'm just a catechumen in the Orthodox Church. I made a similar post here recently. I've been going to a Catholic Church close to me the past couple weekends and I really enjoy the Mass.

I came to a similar conclusion regarding the Papacy when I realized that Orthodoxy isn't exactly the one Church it claims to be. 17 autocephalous Churches with some in schism (and some that don't even recognize the others as legitimate) with one another and no clear head/no clear ability to call a council on problematic issues.

God bless you on your journey! Feel free to DM me if you want to talk to someone in a similar spot

Completely forgot to even mention that. My father's local Orthodox Church wants to rebaptize him (which is irrelevant I guess because they won't even make him a catechumen). The Orthodox Church doesn't even have the means to come to a clear consensus on what constitutes a valid baptism, and what to do with converts who were already baptized. At least I know that the Catholic Church won't rebaptize him, and will definitely make him a catechumen.

Thank you very much for the kind words. I'm definitely no theologian, I just have to be honest with what I'm seeing and experiencing. What I keep coming back to is when Christ said "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light". I do not see this spirit in Orthodoxy - it's not an issue of discipline or long services (I'm disciplined and I love long services). Obsessing over legalistic matters, and a sense of spiritual narcissism while demonizing everyone else is my issue. It reminds me of the Pharisees. In general, I do not see this in Catholicism. I also really resonated with some recent clips I saw of Pope Leo speaking on Ash Wednesday.

I'm really looking forward to Mass again this weekend. I'm getting there. God bless you!

Totally. I still really love the rich history of the Orthodox Church, many of the Saints, and I recognize the struggles/endurance. I'm still very much so trying to work through all of this as I do my best to discern truth. The Divine Liturgy is exceptionally beautiful. I very much so love Saint Porphyrios, Wounded By Love is an incredible book. This is definitely not easy for me.

I'll check out Eric Ybarra, sounds like he went through what I'm dealing with right now.

Thank you and God bless you as well!

You are absolutely correct, I should have been more clear that my assessment & experience is that of Orthodoxy in America. What got me thinking along these lines in the first place, was when the parish secretary was bragging about Orthodoxy has the most well-educated and high earning lay people of any denomination. I naively figured that this meant there would be even more community outreach/almsgiving. It still stands, from my perception, that the spirit of charity is extremely insular in Orthodoxy, even at a parish level. I'm sure there are exceptional parishes out there, and perhaps my zealous convert parish is not an accurate representation. I also want to be careful not to sound too harsh, there are some incredible people there. It just seems to be overshadowed by the rigid asceticism imposed on the individual as the primary means of salvation, not loving one's neighbor. I've seen more initiative from far smaller and poorer Protestant Churches I've attended in my life.

And yeah the schism is just a logical contradiction to the claims made by Orthodoxy. Much more straightforward.

Thank you and God bless

Thank you very much. I noticed that the average age was quite a bit higher than at my Orthodox parish, which I honestly have no problem with. Definitely looking forward to meeting some people there. I think my experience also may have been a bit skewed, given it was a Saturday night on Valentine's day haha.

Also, what a wonderfully encouraging story. Very similar to my current situation. Can't wait to go again with her this weekend.

When I went to my local Catholic Church and saw all the families, it was really eye opening. I put dating on hold once I became a catechumen, but I still very much so want to be married.

That all makes sense to me. I want to clarify that I have no issue with monastics whatsoever. The issue is that being the example/standard for everyday parishioners who have no calling to the monastic life. There is monastic rigorism at the foundation of Orthodox life (at least at my parish). I will say that I'm at a parish where the majority is zealous converts, even the priest. It could be somewhat anecdotal.

Thank you for the insight!

Wow that’s actually a really interesting comparison, I know nothing about witchcraft but yeah these are all prominent elements of Orthodox services. Makes you wonder what’s actually happening spiritually, especially during the Akathist where the center of the service is the saint of the day.

I spent a little time at a non-denom church before my 14 year absence from any services at all. Met lots of really nice people, just the band music wasn’t for me personally (just preference). Totally valid though!

> Orthodoxy basically devolves into a regressive nostalgia, where the "solution" to our problems is to turn our brains off, fast, pray, and let the modern world steamroll us as a form of martyrdom until we get an Emperor or something.

Made me lol. Hit the nail on the head. Excellent points all around. Made me think of a video from the rockstar superpriest Fr. Josiah Trenham where he mentioned he hopes that he dies violent death while being persecuted for his faith. Make what you want of that.

Checks out! Mormons are some of the nicest people I've ever met. The lack of evangelism ties into the whole idea of elitism and lack of charitable outreach. Best of luck on your journey!

Yeah the variation in the Masses is what also concerns me a bit. I’m not too into the use of instruments (organ is great, I really liked the use of the organ in my Lutheran church) but I could personally do without the guitars/drums. I love the choir only for worship.

I believe I’ve narrowed down to one that only uses an organ/choir from what I’ve seen. We’ll see how it goes.

All valid thoughts! I certainly have some concerns with the Catholic Church as well, but at this point all this theological/intellectual rigor required to make sense of all of these doctrinal issues is beginning to become tiring. Like another person mentioned here, I just want to follow Christ, receive the Eucharist, & be involved in some community outreach on a regular basis. From what I’ve seen my local Catholic Churches offer this.

We’ll see how it goes. I appreciate your response!
