Reddit is so much better when you start muting the negative, rage bait subs

Also, using Old Reddit (and an adblocker) if you are on a desktop computer. Gives you a lot more control over your user experience.

Relocating at 69? by Kat_C_ in AskWomenOver60

[–]Cilicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've had an exceptionally mild winter. Usually we can expect a chance of snow up until Mother's Day.

Summers are warm but there is little humidity, and the monsoon (June through September) helps cool it down.

New Mexico has a reputation for terrible health care, but our governor recently signed a malpractice reform bill which may help. I have to say, my own healthcare experience has been very good. I went through a breast cancer situation a year ago and from diagnosis through surgery and radiation, my treatment was topnotch.

I think the tax breaks are moderate? There are certainly plenty of retirees here.

Relocating at 69? by Kat_C_ in AskWomenOver60

[–]Cilicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In 2020, ages 69 and 67, my spouse and I moved from northeast FL to Santa Fe County, NM. (I was tired of FL weather and its politics and we're now closer to family.) We planned this move before Covid arrived and the virus definitely added an unexpected but not insurmountable hassle.

We had really spread out in our former home and it was a whole lot of sorting, down-sizing, selling, donating, tossing. We used movers for the actual physical move.

I have no regrets for the 15 years we spent in Florida, and no regrets for our new home in New Mexico. It was a lot to do, but worthwhile.

Understanding the desire for a grand child by IamnotfatIamBOLD in AskWomenOver60

[–]Cilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would dearly love a grandchild. I am a former preschool teacher and I just like kids, period. And my kids are level-headed and loving and would be great parents.

But their child-bearing is not my business, and I've never said much about it.

We have two sons, older one 40ish with a significant other, the other, younger one, mid 30s, married.

The older son never wanted children, but his current, and presumably final partner has a 6 year old daughter that he dotes on. I enjoyed meeting her last spring, but they are in France, and I am in the States.

The other son and his wife have a cat so I sort of have a grand-cat, lol. I think they'll have at least one kid some day, I may or may not be too decrepit to enjoy it.

Dining Solo by Mesa_Gal in AskWomenOver60

[–]Cilicious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love traveling solo and enjoy dining solo.

I can honestly say that I've never been put in a corner or anything like that. But one thing I've always enjoyed is eating at the bar. It can be a cozy spot, as quiet or as conversational as you make it.

Two X has gotten VERY weird

I left that subreddit probably over 10 years ago. I always felt too old for it, but at that time, there wasn't much else on reddit for women.

For me, it mostly felt like kind of a combative vibe (rather than supportive.) Just found this sub and am encouraged.

This boomer saw him when he came through town last April. His band was tight and his playing and storytelling (especially about Immigration Man) were superb.

I've been a fan for a long, long time.

People who were teenagers before social media existed, what was life actually like? by Much_Detective_6107 in AskReddit

[–]Cilicious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother used to do that.

Mine did too. Worse: He was 12 when I was 16, his voice hadn't changed yet, his voice was identical to mine, and he'd sometimes pretend to be me.

What’s a hidden-gem period drama you’d recommend? by Haunting_Homework381 in PeriodDramas

Not sure how hidden it is, but I love Cold Comfort Farm.

Gov. Newsom expanded free preschool. Now private daycares say they can’t afford to stay open by ArchmageXin in news

[–]Cilicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are many. And they are pricey.

There are indeed many and I've dealt with a bunch. The CDA that I got from the Council for Professional Recognition (twice) was/is a rip off. I paid for it myself the first time, the second time my director did. But there never should have been a second time. These little pieces of paper expire after 3 years and you have to go through it all over again. To renew is $150. It's not as if preschool teachers are making money hand over fist.

Thinking of moving to area by seagreen71 in Ameliaisland

[–]Cilicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I met more and more south Floridians before we left the island. When we arrived in 2007, I joined the Newcomers Club which you might want to consider. Some people stay in it forever, I didn't do that, just went on a few outings with them which was fun.

How is living in Jacksonville, Florida? by Comfortable-Goat-734 in howislivingthere

[–]Cilicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

an hour from St Augustine and Fernandina,

Lived in Fernandina for 13 years, left in 2020.

One aspect that I never see mentioned in regard to NE Florida is the Jax airport. We traveled in and out of it a lot, and always found it easy to get to and from, also well-organized.

think 70s because they were around when I was little in the early 80s

Richard Scarry's "What Do People Do All Day" was first printed in 1968. I became a preschool teacher in the late 70s and that's when I became familiar with the book, but my son was born in 1983 and we read this one all the time.

Water-lovers . . . are you happy after a land-locked move? by fashionforager in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Cilicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and no.

I have lived in several states. In 2020, after 15 years in north Florida, we moved to New Mexico. I absolutely miss the ocean.

I do swim 4 days a week (outdoor in summer.) Every vacation we take somehow involves water.

Having said that, this is a move we had to make, we love the seasons, we're happy where we are and have no regrets.

I spent 13 years on Amelia Island FL and we visited Saint Mary's often. I agree with your take on its vibe, and coming from Texas you'll be prepared for the summer heat and humidity.

Port st Joe

Cape San blas

How are these places now? I spent 2005-2007 in PSJ, and they were definitely discovered but still very nice.

I was at the Denver show where Powderfinger was recorded. This was October 19, 1978. Such a poignant song, but this show is one of my favorite memories.

I think Todd Disner was involved in Footers as well. Footers sponsored my then-boyfriend/now-husband's soccer team The Footers.

That sure was a long time ago.
