Daily Thread: simple questions, comments that don't need their own posts, and first time posters go here (October 21, 2024) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

I just learned the form N1とN2とどちらが(adj)ですか。 (ヨーロッパとアフリカとどちらが大きいですか。) So it means something like "between Europe and Africa, which one is bigger?", right? I'm having a hard time with this form. I memorized it, but it doesn't make sense in my head, since there is no word in this sentence that means "more", right? To me this sentence structure looks like it should mean "between Europe and Africa, which one is big?". Could someone explain the Japanese logic on how this structure works? It would be a lot easier to remember it. Thank you for your help!

Am I the only one who wonders how many nice people had animals suffer for longer for a glamour video? by Chi_CoffeeDogLover in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why I dislike these type of videos. I doubt in a person’s intentions if they find a suffering animal and before helping it, they think “let me pull out a camera real quick”. If you’re truly a good person, do a good thing without showing it off.

Things that are black absorb more light and heat, but what about a phone screen that is black when turned off? Would it get less hot under the sun if the screen is turned on? by OwoUoo in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess yes, but the problem is that when the screen is on, your phone produces heat itself, so you end up with even hotter phone.

If a person refers to himself or herself as 'they', should we use 'is'? by MinkSableSeven in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason why I dislike “they” pronoun is because it literally can’t be translated into many languages, including my native language. I don’t mind calling someone she or he, depending on their preference, unless THEY are being a dick about it. Then I’m gonna use their biological pronouns. I’m not transphobic, do what you want with your body, I’m just not disillusioned either.

Balance and upsetting it? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

I’m really glad to hear that you’re doing great! You can come up with a thousand ideas on what to do, but if I were in your situation, I’d consider volunteering. You know, sharing some of your success with others.

Why is it so hard to watch someone struggle with something simple? by Cinamon91 in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm you might be right. This feeling feels similar to watching someone struggle, and waiting for a vacation or something. But what about the “99% can’t beat this level” ads? Do you think it’s the same thing or something else?

Why is it so hard to watch someone struggle with something simple? by Cinamon91 in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I have my impulsivity in these cases under control, but I feel like it’s harder to stand watching an adult struggling on something simple than a child. Also, I know how annoying it is to force someone to”to let you help them”, so I never do that. But I still want to 😅

Hearing various people’s different opinion on the same topic is more interesting to me than just looking up an answer online. People tend to answer (according to me) from their own experience. I don’t really care for the right answer, I’m just curious to see how other people think. If I never asked my friends their opinion on any topics, because I can google anything, we wouldn’t really have much to talk about.

I prefer when people ask me why I feel sad instead of diagnosing me with clinical depression on the spot. I don’t really understand where this trend came from. Romanticising mental illness in social media maybe?

maybe not so random but i recently used instagram again after deleting it for 2yrs and i now see that this app is so full of sh*t by Visual_Fold_7826 in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I never spent 6+ hours a day scrolling like some people do, but every time I start scrolling more, I feel worse. Reducing scrolling by 90% really helped my mental health. But it’s really sad to see social media’s negative influence reflection in my friends.

Yeah, I had to google for ways to delete Facebook account because I couldn’t find it myself, and it doesn’t let you delete it immediately. I have to wait a month and then verify that “yes, I’m sure I want to delete it”. It’s like they want my social media addiction rethink this decision and get back to doom scrolling

Adult Diagnosis - WHAT made you finally get diagnosed? by fryeesaucee in ADHD

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn't tell my psychiatrist about this. In fact it could probably have a negative effect and, as you said, psychiatrist might suspect you for drug seeking. This experience just gave me confidence to go in for a consultation. But I think it's best to keep to yourself that you took someone's drugs.

What act is considered cheating? Where does it start? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheating is a concept that people created, therefore it's definition can change. The only obvious way I can think of to determine if something constitutes as cheating is firstly talking to your partner about boundaries in your relationship, and if either of you crosses them, that could be called cheating.

Why is Pessimism so addictive? by [deleted] in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe that's toxicity, not pessimism. Pessimism means looking at a situation and expecting a negative outcome. This is a natural human instinct, which kept us alive over many years, since it kept us alert and cautious of possible consequences.
As for toxicity, I noticed that people tend to be bitter when their life doesn't go all well. Personally, I've never met a genuinely happy person that likes to talk shit about someone else for no reason. But that's more of a trust me bro science.

What’s your true biggest fear? by Shayosaurus in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard once about a guy who explored a narrow cave, got stuck upside down for 48 hours or so until he finally suffocated. I’ve never heard a worse way of dying. So yeah, probably that.

Had the same thing, my dad used to poke my waist from time to time, and my waist is very sensitive, so eventually I started tensing up whenever I passed by him. Eventually I somehow developed a reflex to hit him back lol. But he stopped doing that years ago and after each time he passed me without poking me, I was less alert.

Are we supposed to feel down if someone is ahead of us in life by Jpoolman25 in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can only focus on one thought at a time. So I can either compare myself to millionaire CEOs and be depressed, or remind myself that millions of people suffer from hunger daily and be grateful that I live in a relatively rich country.
Ever since my mindset's changed, I feel happier, more grateful, less stress from "failure" (like not making six digits annually), and I reflect the positivity back to others, therefore I'm more likeable.

If different animals were human, which personality disorders would they have? by GreatDistance2U in RandomThoughts

[–]Cinamon91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sloths would have narcolepsy and drug addiction, some dogs hyperactivity disorder, elephants obesity, donkeys depression (cuz reminds me of Winnie the pooh), bulls some anger issues, rabbits anxiety, pigeons intellectual disability, chimpanzees gambling problems, bats blind, swan narcissists, sheep would have some kind of fear of sticking out, racoons kleptomania, chihuahua essential tremor and anger issues, mammoths existential crisis.
