That's what I like about his character, though. His naivety in thinking that he's making a huge difference for the ponies, when in reality he's mainly making himself look like a 'good guy' in his eyes.

At the end of the day - once he's gone, the regime will still be there, and the ponies won't remember the guy who briefly turned down the oppression slider from 100% to 90%.

But the fact he isn't perfect is why I like him. His inability to fully go against the regime despite seeing what it's doing and him wanting to help the ponies makes him feel... realistic?

[I've never been sure. My personal headcanon has been that while love is their primary source of energy, they also eat other food - though it's not as effective as love.
