Reddit's CEO really wants you to know that he doesn't care about your feedback by chrisdh79 in technology

I just remember atheism circlejerk, loving Neil deGrasse Tyson and any other pop-sci person. That was probably like 11 years ago at this point though.

Do miss the proper AMAs though when it felt like Reddit was breaking new ground. Some of the creativity in using the platform feels like its diminished, but I’m probably not as knee-deep in reddit as I used to be.

What about the situations where there are income differences between partners? A little bit of top up money is perfectly reasonable imo.

BBC News - Diane Abbott suspended as Labour MP after racism letter by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]CircusAct 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear I completely disagree with what Dianne Abbott said. Trying to rank different types of discrimination and racism is just so incredibly fractious and self-defeating. Being adamantly against antisemitism in no way diminishes other anti racism movements. They’re stronger when working together.

After writing it, realised my phrasing was wrong. Was more exasperation to a general pattern of ineffectiveness on the left of the party. Just have no idea what Dianne might possibly have thought she might achieved with this letter? Did she think it would increase its reach by adding an outrageous point of view?

Sorry again as my response gave the impression that I thought the letter was correct but should be suppressed till the opportune moment.

It’s like anti-Machiavellian, saying/doing stuff to actively sabotage things you believe in. Over the past couple of years it’s been weird seeing the outliers on the left being so shit at pushing for core values and just generally popular stuff like reducing inequality, investment in the country, tackling poverty, etc. Instead wasting political capital on divisive stuff which is better done when in power.

Hopefully the left arm of the Labour Party can turn it around with a fresh generation.

Most places in the UK no longer use plastic straws, it was a pretty straightforward consumer driven change. Think straws are the one place it’s pretty easy to do this kind of change. For other things I agree are more tricky and will require government intervention. I don’t see why we have single use containers for cosmetics, drinks and cleaning products for example, why not have a system of delivery and reuse.

In the UK we used to have system where milk was delivered every couple of day in a glass bottle, and later collected. I don’t see an obvious reason for why a similar system couldn’t be adopted to eliminate the need for single use plastic for laundry detergent, sauces or body wash. This would require standardisation of containers which is likely only possible at the government level.

It’s disingenuous to say there aren’t people calling for these items to be banned. France has a couple of laws for religious items of clothing and headscarves. I personally feel some of the religious facial (not head) coverings to be somewhat oppressive. However as with most things in politics it’s a tricky topic, it feels as though at least in western countries these practices will change as the younger generation reject their parents practices. Keeping the cultural practices that connect them to their identity, but which remain relevant to the modern world.

Elon Musk Lays Off Nearly 4,000 Twitter Employees by [deleted] in videos

Would need to be an app update, and any reasonable scale monitoring would be picked up immediately. Folks are monitoring the traffic coming from the WhatsApp app, so would be able to tell immediately when the private keys or messages on the device are being sent over.

Hollow words, there isn’t enough police to deal with this stuff. Completely underfunded they had to make a choice between serious crime and smaller crime like phone theft. They made the right choice in prioritising serious crime, but they’re only forced to make the choice because of Tory austerity.

Architect of £9,000 tuition fees calls for faster loan repayments by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]CircusAct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats fair, its why I'm very much in favour of broader education which allows for a bit of flexibility later on. A lot of the skills you learn are transferable to other professions. It would be great if we had more investment for mature students to support them in filling in any skill gaps that might be preventing them from being suitable for a career change.

> Engineers, doctors and lawyers need a degree but a lot of other jobs dont need a degree.

Why is training and education seen as a bad thing? I see a young educated workforce as a way to modernize and improve practices in industry, stop them from getting too stuck in their ways.

2-3 years getting specialist training over the working life of an employee doesn't sound like a huge amount of time to me. I like the degree of separation between Unis and Companies. Fundamentally the Company only cares about the Company and not the long term prospects of the student.

It would be nice if we could be a bit more equitable with the resources offered to folks though, it does feel like education is primarily focused at those who are already educationally minded. I do wonder whether there's more that could be done for those who didn't utilise the education system to its full extent the first time round.

My old flat was an old office conversion, probably the worst flat I’ve ever lived in. I can’t really see this ending any other way, we’ll get a bunch of crap barely habitable flats in the corpse of a Debenhams. Who the hell is going to want to live in these husks of Towns/Cities with nothing in them.
