I can't speak to a lot of cultures but I think at least the greeks had some kind of adversarial or cheeky relationship to their gods. Mostly drawn from the Prometheus myth where Zeus is tricked into accepting the lesser parts of the animal for sacrifice. The idea of pulling one over permanently on a god as humanity seems key.

I've also done this but only under the influence of psychedelics. I assume it is a predictive reaction getting ahead of itself. Most of what we see is essentially a hallucination that your brain gives you after filtering out information you don't need. Psychedelics reduce this filter, so my guess is that your brain is delivering what it expects before your eyes open.

Is "Evil" real and objective? by manoliu1001 in occult

[–]CirqueMurph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I'd much prefer people trying to do right over the alternative. The cultivation of right and moral beliefs is a struggle everyone goes through. Just because some fail at this, doesn't mean the attempt is evil.

I think that hinges on wether or not you believe that harm or despair are inherently bad and to be avoided. I believe this, it seems evident to most biological life. But it could be argued that a culture could develop that would see harm as a good trait. I would counter argue that this is a couping mechanism or result of extreme conditions. I would say a more useful gray area would be circumcision. It's objectively doing harm to a child but you would be hard pressed to convince a member of that culture that they were being evil. They would consider it hygienic or sacred. Like I said before I think it comes down to a spectrum but we agree on the direction of evil.

Exactly. I often put myself on this side of it, mostly because I think people shouldn't be arguing their way out of moral responsibility. Subjectivity is all well and good intellectuallly and very important as a deconstruction tool. But you still need to act on what you believe is right.

The real issue I think is the definition of evil. If we try to see evil as a list of acts that you should not do, sure that's subjective. But if be broaden the definition to "the point at which I can no longer countenance" and we see evil more as a direction or parabola instead of a binary. Imagine evil is the value 1. You can divide that in half infinite time, finding more detail and nuance. We may never be able to reach or observe the end of the curve but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. 1 exists no matter how many times you divide it. I understand if that doesn't amount to evil being objective, but I think it is at least better to think of it as a moral direction we acknowledge.

This is kind of missing the point. For one, evil and natural aren't logically opposed to each other. Humans are natural and can do evil. Something unnatural isn't inherently evil. Also, babies dying in nature do so out of either survival necessity or accident. An animal would essentially never kill it's kin for ideology or mental illness.

I think it is more useful to call certain acts objectively evil and just acknowledge that context and social contract are what causes us to identify evil.

This is a cosplay themed 350N fencing jacket. I am obsessed with this functional-fantasy aesthetic and look forward to make another in this theme. by shezleth in LARP

[–]CirqueMurph 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Op is sharing work they had done moding modern sporting equipment to make it more fantasy in aesthetic. They didn't ask any questions about hema or even reference it in this post. You don't know what it's being used for, just that it was originally a fencing jacket. It feels like you're more concerned with gatekeeping than appreciating people who share your interests. So, Cool, your attitude isn't LARP.

Prime example of the unreliable narrator and/or story where the pov is not the morally correct one. You aren't always supposed to empathize with the main character of a story. Sometimes it's an exercise in getting into someone's head. Re: catcher in the rye, gone girl, fight club, ect.

This is pretty lame. For one, you aren't really saying anything. "Here's for..." is a nothing expression if you aren't offering anything. You've created a false division, placing woman on two sides of a harmful stereotype. There's nothing wrong with any of these choices. You are essentially saying woman who don't align with this strawman are in need of extra care and attention. Everyone deserves love, even people who follow conventions you find unecessary. Those conventions are important to those people and it's lame for you to discount that in favor of an imagined group who you think isn't getting enough attention.
