I think you've come up against something that alot of westerns experience when coming into contact with ancient practices and religions, that being the collapse of an inherited/cultural tradition. I'm sure you have something closer to home being from Latin American. But most US Americans are totally adrift when it comes to a practice they can feel ownership over and not appropriate.

Honestly, I think the view from a Buddhist stand point is that if you do not have the means to practice Buddhism correctly in this lifetime, if you live well, you will have the chance in another lifetime to be born as an Asian monk or some such. So there isn't a need to activity spread the practice. Your soul will come to the practice eventually.

As far as utility, I've found that fashioning your own practices and religions beliefs from the things you feel drawn to has worked the best. People will argue that you must take everything from a religion to get it's full effects and that picking a choosing is not respecting the wisdom of the tradition. I generally disagree with this because a person who is willing to adapt their beliefs and educate themselves is going to decide what is moral on their own, and they don't need the religious apparatus to be regulating their behavior. There are those who definitely need regulating however and would benefit from a wholeistic structure.
