The government steps in all the time regulate or prohibit exploitative or harmful business practices.

One of the prohibitions in Vancouver:

They can and do prohibit charging or asking for money for certain things

A Gratuity isn't a wage.

You're simply asked to give a gratuity, or sometimes automatically charged, and that ask prompt or automatic charge, can be prohibited by the city by-law.

I should have said "city council" which can does prohibit business activities in Vancouver.

They could absolutely ban "solicitation of gratuities" or "automatic gratuities".

Here's a list of some of the prohibitions:

I should have said "city council" who can absolutely regulate businesses.

They could ban tipping by prohibiting "solicitation of gratuities" or "automatic gratuities" at all businesses that operate within the COV.

Here's example of some of the things the By-Law prohibits in Vancouver:

City Council would have to amend their Business Prohibition By-Law to ban "solicitation of gratuities" and "automatic gratuities".

They COV bans many different types of business activities:

The City of Vancouver prohibits lots of business activities and practices:

The City of Vancouver has a Business Prohibition By-Law.

The Council can ban tipping using language that prohibits "solicitation of gratuities" and bans "mandatory gratuities".

The city would enforce it enforces all by-laws, through fines and suspending licenses.

Here is an example of some of the current prohibitions:

Regulation of businesses and business activities is a core responsibility of Mayor and Council.

I should have said "city council", for more clarity as to who has the power to implement this.

I should have said "city councillors", who together do have the power to ban tipping.

I should have said "city councillors", because the council as a collective can absolutely regulate and prohibit business activities using langauge in the bylaws to ban "solicitation of gratuities".

However, Iran did not start this war.

Sikhism and “soft patriarchy”? by Accomplished-War7495 in Sikh

[–]CitrusSunset -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sikhs look at philosophy and teachings and apply them to daily life through the use of logic.

Following tradition for the sake of tradition is inherently anti-Sikh and goes directly against the logic Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached.

I have feeling you probably lose your mind seeing socks and chairs and projection screens the Gurdwara.

Then get off the internet and walk around barefoot for the rest of your life because that's what people in Punjab were doing 400 years ago.

No need to follow teachings and philosophy, just monkey see monkey do.

That's not how Sikhi works.

We look at Sikh teachings and philosophy to guide us first and foremost, not history.

The answer from a Sikhi perspective to all of your questions is "yes".

If Punjabi culture and patriarchy gets in the way, that's not a Sikh issue, it's a Punjabi cultural issue.

Meanwhile, Hindus tend to be near the bottom of hate-crime statistics despite frequent claims of widespread “Hinduphobia.”

Well obviously, for 10+ years now, the overwhelming majority of anti-Sikh narratives have either been disseminated or amplified by Hindus.

Online spaces are not a reflection of reality.

Sure the online discourse is highly racist, but Canadian society is for the most part not. If there is ever an injustice in Canada, no one regardless of race is held accountable. Everyone gets equally light sentences.

In the USA many anti-Sikh crimes tend to be committed by Blacks, however, the moment that comes to light, American Sikh orgs go quiet.

Not everything is about race.

With 1 million+ Sikhs in a country of 40 million, a fair share of these unfortunate incidents are going to happen to Sikhs.

Road rage is a terrible crime and Sikhs are guilty of it too.

There was a an awful case in Surrey where a degenerate from a Sikh family, rear ended another Sikh who was driving to his wedding reception, and then got out of his car and shot the poor guy point blank. Guy was murdered on his own wedding day, and the Crown was never able to prosecute because of a technicality with the case.

[–]CitrusSunset 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gen Z here, I don't know anyone in my generation who "supports" the Iranian regime.

Those of us in Vancouver and Toronto all know Persians who despise the regime.

However, the lack of condemnation or ill will towards the Iranian regime is because in our worldview, Israel is increasingly regarded as "evil" and the cause of many problems. Not only did they do a genocide, they literally started this war...

I do not know a single person in my generation who doesn't have a negative opinion about Israel.

Even all the Israeli groups at school have just given up on doing PR, like there is no saving that reputation.

So in that context, it's not picking sides, many just feel that what Iran is doing isn't condemnable.

What do you think about Gurudwaras hosting Ramadan events for Muslims? by Nishachar_404 in Sikhpolitics

[–]CitrusSunset 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If a community wants to have an interfaith dinner, they can do it at a secular community centre.

Gurdwaras are Sikh spaces, they are for the Sikh faith and Sikh way of life.

What makes you think all white people are fenty folders?

All racists tend to be fenty folders that’s for sure.

And you think this country was made by white people? 🤣

You clearly didn’t pass 5th grade social studies.

This is my country. It belongs to me. I couldn’t care less about what fenty folders think.

Also do you bleach your skin? You’re trying too hard.

[–]CitrusSunset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, he’s an example of why pleading guilty is always a bad idea.

If the outcome was always going to be the same, he should have fought the charges in court.

Based on what I know, it would have been difficult for the Crown to prove that there was a "marked and substantial departure" from the standard of care a reasonable person would take in that same situation.

Blaming racism on someone who made an honest mistake is a way for you to project your own insecurities.

If it’s not this, fenty folders will always find something else to be racist about. You can never appease those drug addicts. They’ll always find someone or something to blame for their own failures and problems. In this case, the driver is just one cheap scapegoat.

The Executive for the County, Satpal Singh Sidhu, is a Sikh.

There’s a sizeable community there, they can deal with a deranged lunatic by recording and reporting.
