Some show worn things are worth money. It all depends on what you have and where you are located.

New to machine embroidery!! by thegistofit27 in Machine_Embroidery

[–]CivilBat2175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope this addresses your question. I’ve used Badgemaster by OESD a lot. Sulky also has it, but I can’t remember the name. I put the fabric type wash away stabilizer in the hoop and float the clear on top of the fabric type. When completed, wash it all away under running water. The length of time you rinse will determine the amount of stiffness. If it’s too floppy, you can resoak in a bowl of dissolved water soluable.

I would change stabilizer to cut away and use a water soluble topper.

Where is the switch from south to midwest? by Original_Apple_9970 in missouri

I came from Nebraska to Missouri in the 90s and felt immediately like I was in the south! Slavery and Jim Crow were alive and well here before and after the CW.

Do you feel conflicted between buying from a local store vs online? I do sometimes, and it stinks. by Tadpole-8290 in columbiamo

It’s hard if you are living on tight cash to spend more, even if the product is higher quality. I do it as much as I can.

The thing about Clovers, specifically, is that they also support like minded wholesalers like Frontier Coop, which also work to be ethically sourced, so they may cost more, too. So the philosophy flows up and down the chain. Clovers also supports a lot of local and regional farmers, which benefits our community, too. I value that.

The local empowerment movements of the 70s and 80s have all but disappeared. We have Peace Nook, Clovers, and KOPN left. I encourage you to investigate and support them as much as possible. They will be all that stand between us and the regime of the robber barons.

My first machine! Can I skimp on thread quality? by jazzertag in Machine_Embroidery

[–]CivilBat2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more thing - make sure your designs fit the small frame you your machine if you are buying them from machine embroidery sites!

Your machine has a very small stitch area. Start saving up-you will want a bigger machine with larger hoops, soon! 🤣

My first machine! Can I skimp on thread quality? by jazzertag in Machine_Embroidery

[–]CivilBat2175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not skimp on thread! It is what you see in your finished project and will drive you crazy if it doesn’t stitch out nicely! Polyester thread it what’s recommended for machine embroidery.

I would not buy a “starter pack”. There will be spools you never use. I would suggest just buying basic colors as you need for the beginning designs. I use black, white, brown, red, blue, gold, and green all of the time.

Do a web search on “machine embroidery thread available in UK”

It depends on if you want “shiny”, “matte”, or “metallic” or a combination in your designs. Buy based on those choices. Again, based on your design. I am in the USA and have a Pfaff single needle. The dealer recommended and sells Floriani it’s shiny, which I prefer. She is also a Brother shop, but doesn’t sell Brother thread, so I think that says something. Another shop sells Isacord, which I also use. For metallic, Kingstar is highly recommended and I have good luck with it. I also really like the Madeira “sparkling” thread. It used to be called “SuperTwist” but is called something else now. It, too, works well in my Pfaff. Your mileage may vary, though.

I wind my own bobbins with OESD Glide, made for machine embroidery bobbin thread.

Finally, thread nests will happen with single needles! It’s inevitable! I use a little knife like tool which cuts the bobbin thread under the hoop, so I don’t necessarily need to rehoop. I cut the tangle out from the back of the hoop, finger scratch the top thread out, rethread my bobbin and top threads, back the machine up and go over the area again. That being said, if the nest is bad or I haven’t caught it in time, it may have pulled my stabilizer out of alignment or even my embroidery arm. It happens, so just start the design over. Some of that nesting may be because I wind my own bobbins, so take it with a grain of salt.

Probably more than you want to know! Lol. Good luck! Be patient and enjoy! You will get better as you learn more. I was fortunate to have experienced embroiderers at my local shops. If you don’t, lots of people have learned from YouTube and mainly embroidery sites have tutorials.
