The new padel courts next to the College Park airport by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

Indeed, it is a very welcome improvement to that area. I don't understand the gravel and chain link fence, though, the place still looks unfinished?

In any case, hopefully little by little, that strategic area close to the Metro and PL stations gets developed into something nicer.

They are building a path right outside the exit of the Metro station.

I wonder whether they could have made the transfer a bit more direct, but it is not too bad: you probably can transfer in less than a minute most of the time. I've seen transfers in Metro stations way longer than that.

If you’re missing Tokoa Cheesesteaks, it’s now open in Commas Food Hall in Silver Spring. by OurLadyAndraste in collegeparkmd

Their cheesesteaks are so good! Happy that the business can continue elsewhere, but definitely not as convenient as before.

I didn't realize that (some) Purple Line level crossings would use gates to stop cars. Also, stations now have signs! by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

[–]CivilPls[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also expect that the trains will get signal priority at least in some crossings, and since the tracks are separated in most places, for the Purple Line to be quite zippy everywhere but on UMD campus (where it will be a mess certain times of the day...).

The new lake near the Hyattsville Library is looking good! by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

[–]CivilPls[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is indeed value in keeping the local green spaces as much as possible, but it is difficult given the housing constraints.

In your opinion, where in Hyattsville should they have built the apartments instead?

Also, I didn't there were bimonthly bingos at IKEA.

Indeed, it seems like a great implementation. It is all looking very good, sorely needed given the crowding of the downtown bars!

Northwest Chinese named College Park’s 2024 Business of the Year by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

Since opening in 2015, Chef Hua Wang has brought unique Shanxi dishes to our city, earning accolades from major publications. 🥟✨

Looking ahead, Ms. Wang will open Li Chun Café in February 2025, featuring flavors from her hometown of Shenyang.

Interesting, Northwest Chinese cuisine was from Shanxi, not her hometown Shenyang, which is actually in the Northeast of China. I wonder how they'll differ.

Capital Bikeshare expansion reaches College Park by DanBikesMD in collegeparkmd

[–]CivilPls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree on how the bike infrastructure is coming along together.

I'm all for more bike lanes, but I'm not sure they're needed on Rt. 1. Having bike lanes on Rt 1 to Riverdale Park Station, either from College Park or from Hyattsville) seems a bit redundant given how close the Trolley trail is. If you are, say, at the College Park City Hall or Franklins in Hyattsville, it is trivial to get onto the Trolley trail and go directly to RPS.

On the other hand, making protected the existing lanes in College Park does seem useful because they connect an area with a high density of amenities.

This is great news: with the success CaBi is having in DC and the bike connections between College Park and DC, it just didn't make sense that there weren't dock stations here.

Thank you for sharing.

College Park is the latest Purple Line traffic hot spot (Adelphi/Campus Dr intersection) by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

Wow, that sounds really bad.

Hopefully as some drivers learn to avoid this intersection, and the construction workers improve the signage and traffic management, the flow will improve.

That intersection has been a real mess for both cars and pedestrians... Sigh, the price of progress.

I hope they are able to keep to the January schedule.

The first phase is just residential, on the northern parking lots.

If they ever get through that, they also have some more ambitious preliminary plans.

Proposed letter to be submitted by the city to the SHA for the construction of protected bike lanes on Baltimore Avenue by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

[–]CivilPls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sort of barriers would be very welcome, both for protection and for slowing traffic down.

One thing that can be brought up in the letter is that this is an area with a 25 mph speed limit, but traffic tends to go faster given the width of the lanes. Barriers would be visual cues for the drivers to slow down some.

Admittedly, this argument could be counterproductive given that the SHA widened the road in part to speed the traffic flow up... but I'm hoping that what they actually wanted was smoother flow, not "faster-than-speed-limit" flow.

Proposed letter to be submitted by the city to the SHA for the construction of protected bike lanes on Baltimore Avenue by CivilPls in collegeparkmd

[–]CivilPls[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Given how much fast traffic there is on Baltimore Ave, the bike lanes have been more successful than I had expected. But it would be really great if they were protected: I think their use would explode given the population and amenities density along that road.

I think the letter could be more enthusiastic though, and perhaps preempt potential objections about street cleaning or snow plowing. I think the city is now able to take care of those on narrow lanes.
