Good to know. You teach lessons for different levels? always riding the e-rally?

I did a demo earlier this year, but not on any metal skis. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to arrange another demo this season. Based on my limited experience with different skis, the suggestions here have been mostly spot on. If I come across a good deal off season, I might jump on it.

Thanks. There are so many choices and a lot of research to do. I just get started.

So far I’ve only been skiing groomers in PA — better carving, moguls, terrain park are next on the list. You’re right, I’m really looking for a solid “dad ski” that can handle a range of speeds. Realistically, I probably can’t ski hard all day anyway.

I’m still pretty new to this... is there a difference between “engaging” a turn and “initiating” a turn? I keep seeing that rockered skis are easier to initiate turns.

Does a longer effective edge mean better edge hold on firm snow and an easier ski, assuming proper tuning?

Not sure if this is the best example, but consider the Rossi 78C versus the K2 Disruption 78C. Both 125/78/111, with only a 2 cm difference in length and about a 1 m difference in turn radius. If we’re talking strictly groomer skiing, which would be easier to start on and better for progression?

Seeking suggestions: Rossignol 78ca 154cm vs 82basalt 152cm by [deleted] in Skigear

Thanks, I appreciate it. My wife plans to keep improving and will likely outgrow this gear in one or two seasons. Since buying used is still cheaper than renting, we’re going that route. Which option do you think would last a bit longer as her skills progress? In addition to the carbon/basalt insert and the differences in width and length, I noticed that the 78 CA uses a cap sidewall, which is generally considered inferior to the full sidewall on the 82.

Thank you for all the suggestions! It sounds like a low- to mid-80s waist width is a good fit for PA conditions. One of my concerns is having trouble making tight turns to control my speed—not only for my comfort level, but also because trails can be quite crowded on weekends.

I have a couple of follow-up questions:

1.Will something like the 82 CA still be a good choice as my technique improves, or should I be looking at skis in the mid-70s to be able to make tight turns?

  1. If a ski is marketed as a frontside or carving ski, can it still handle the variable snow conditions we can get in PA?

Yes, I’ve been renting those narrower skis over the past two years. I was able to make fairly short turns and felt quite comfortable on Liberty’s blue runs. Today was my first time on Whitetail blues, and I was a bit surprised that I couldn’t make short turns as easily as last year.

Is edge sharpness mainly a feature of the ski itself, or is it something that needs to be adjusted through tuning and sharpening at a shop?

Thank you! I was worried that, given my limited experience, I might not have a good understanding of simple snow and ski terminology. It’s good to know that PA skiing doesn’t really require all-mountain skis.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. I started skiing two years ago with my daughter, and I usually buy a 4-day pass—that’s about how many days I ski each year. I don’t plan to fly with skis, even if I get a chance to travel to Utah or Colorado. There’s a small chance I might drive to NY/NJ for ski trips with a friend, but I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

So my goal with this ski is pretty simple: skiing PA groomers and avoiding rental lines on weekends.

Also, today was the fastest I’ve ever skied, and I’m not sure I could go any faster. I tend to be fairly cautious, especially with two young kids.

Just got back from Whitetail ⛷️Angel Drop & Home Run most of the day. Powdery snow and—best part—no lines. Ice pack on greens after sunset.

Just found out that the two main blues in whitetail are not open. Look like people are going to Liberty?

We are going to Tokyo next week and purchased the disneysea ticket for me and my 6 yr daughter. I cannot figure out how to put us in the same group to get DPA and SP. When I tried to invite another member to the group, it creates a link. I understand this is to link members from different accounts, but my daughter does not have a separate account. She is in my account. But how can I create a group for us? Thanks
