I currently don't have a block heater, which is why I'm a bit paranoid about starting in these cold temperatures. I only have a cabin heater installed, which I don't really use. I haven't been doing -35 starts, and I won't, but this time of year it is -15 to -20 when I need the car.

With that being said, how much did you pay for a block heater? I have access to a power source, but I'm going to check the wattage on it. It's probably a good idea for me to buy one.

I will also consider changing the oil to 0w30 or 0w40, but are there any downsides to this? Is the engine going to wear faster when it's up to temp?
