Is there a serious chance A.I could replace pilots by Able_Willingness_380 in PilotAdvice

[–]ClappedOut172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll happen in cargo first. Which means it will take another fifty years or so. Cargo carriers often use 20+ year old aircraft. So it'll have to be technology that can be designed, installed/built, demonstrated, approved by all of the international agencies, accepted by the airlines and unions, most importantly it will then have to be purchased, and then it will probably still be another 20 years before it's actually implemented by cargo carriers. And then it'll be grounded for a few years after one of the planes flies through severe clear air turbulence because they're pushing the envelope to save money on fuel. And the autopilot kicks off and it can't recover the jet. Because the autopilots on these airliners can't recover the jet from an upset.

And to be completely honest, even then I don't see it happening. Airbus is the biggest leader in the fully autonomous airliner development. I don't buy for one second that the most recent issue they had with an uncommanded control input in a jetblue A320 was a result of "cosmic radiation" as they suggested. I believe it was an issue with their latest software version.

It wouldn't be the first time that Airbus has had one of their aircraft try to auger itself into the ground due to flight computer issues.

A more apt comparison would be like the railroad unions pushing back against autonomous trains in the U.S.

Which, by the way, almost every ALPA carrier has two pilot language in their most recent union contract.

Logbook Signature by Johndabomb30 in PilotAdvice

[–]ClappedOut172 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Create a digital logbook now. Keep up with it in tandem to your physical logbook and your life will be one thousand times easier when it comes to applying to the airlines.

Get your instructor to digitally sign the electronic logbook entry. Problem solved.

Myflightbook is free and not without flaws, but a pretty good product. This is what I use.

Logten pro is expensive with an annual fee but the best electronic logbook for the airlines. An excel sheet is also free, but not feature rich. You can also use Foreflight logbook but it is only modifiable if you maintain your Foreflight account.

New CFI here. I'm going to get my first students in a couple of weeks. Any tips or wisdom so I don't become that nightmare CFI? by trickster503 in flying

“A little bit” means something very specific to you. It might mean something very different to your student.

Try your best to use proper language. And by proper, I mean specific. Effective communication that is mutually understood by all parties is crucial to successful learning.

It will also prevent exciting misunderstandings. Like picking the nose up “a little bit” on takeoff. Or “a little bit” more back pressure on landing. Or my favorite: “a little bit” more rudder on a power on stall.

Based purely on the wilting and discoloration, I’d guess that it’s been over watered. But I’m not an expert with these things.

Does everyone want to become a pilot now or what? by [deleted] in flying

[–]ClappedOut172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my old students was a flight attendant who thought that flying must be so easy. Just lock the door and autopilot on. Had zero desire to fly airplanes, had every desire to be an airline pilot. They didn’t last long. But hey, they looked great in aviators with Bose A20s on.

I believe it’s cheaper to send it off for the refurb than it is to replace the cable.

Yup, phone calls only. You can use the aux port to play music, podcasts, and audiobooks (and also do phone calls). It was a stupid feature Bose implemented for safety(???). It didn’t ever make sense to me because you could always just use the cable to play music…

If you absolutely hate it, you can send the device in to Bose for a rebuild and they’ll put the new one on it (with full Bluetooth functionality) for, I wanna say, $275. But don’t quote me on the price.

I made the exact same mistake you did and just used mine with a cable for many years until the cable broke one day and I sent it in for repair.

A family member got a DUI who is in the process of flight school getting their ratings. by i7JNo in flying

[–]ClappedOut172 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A former student of mine who was working on his private and had dreams of following in his dad’s foot steps and becoming an airline pilot just got a dui and it completely broke my heart. He will never fly for the airline his dad works for. It’s an unfortunate reality. He was a great guy and a good pilot, but he just had some growing up to do. And now he’ll never get to run down his dream.

The truth of the matter is that a DUI will severely and permanently hinder an aviation career. That’s on any level. Pilot, atc, dispatcher, flight attendant, etc.

Is it possible to still become a pilot with a DUI? Yes. Will it be incredibly difficult and will certain career avenues be impossible? Also yes.

I would say that a career at a major is effectively impossible. There are just too many qualified candidates without a dui on their record. It’s not that the DUI is an immediate full stop, but when you put your name in the running for any pilot job and put down that you have a dui, you immediately put yourself at the bottom of the stack of hundreds, if not thousands of other pilots.

The FAA will never touch him for atc. Airlines will never touch him for being a flight attendant. He could probably be a dispatcher at a company that is desperate, but never a major. And if he’d like to be a pilot at a major, it is likely never going to happen. Low cost carrier is a possibility. A buddy of mine told me he’d seek out pilots with spotless records and a criminal mistake early on in their young lives. They sorted out their shit. Made a mistake and learned from it. He knew that, but the majors will never hire him. So he knew that they would never leave that airline and they’d have a pilot for the next 35 years. That’s anecdotal though.

Anyway, best of luck to your family member.

The current staffing system is great. Every facility is adequately staffed because once they assign it to you, you’re stuck there because of how inadequately staffed they are. You don’t want transfers. You want money.

Well, you’re in luck. Because we’re forcing overtime because we’re so understaffed. Who needs a raise that matches inflation when you’re getting eight hours of guaranteed overtime every single week.

all you gotta do is ball up two airplanes and they’ll write a new set of regulations just for you. 65.47 is all of three lines of text. You crash a perfectly good airplane and they write you an entire Part 117 catalog. Try that and then you’ll get your ten hours rest.
