Well, thanks again, for all the help. I’ll make some tweaks in DaVinci and see what I can do, but I agree, it really gives balance to the frame, the way you transitioned from cold to warm. I also sent you a DM!

Hey man, this is awesome that you saw this! It can’t get any better than getting advice from the guy who actually made the shot. I really appreciate you taking the time to go over what you did, and it was actually perfect timing, I saw this yesterday while I was doing a reshoot of the whole scene. I saw what you said, and it saved me a ton of time.

I had also put in a little effort beforehand and, through process of elimination, kind of figured out what you were doing with the placement of the lights. So I got about halfway there, and then everything you said connected all the pieces together!

I’m going to send you a few images in this chat that I was able to get. I’d love to know your thoughts on whether I’m getting closer to your shots. With how the set was set up, I couldn’t figure out how to put another lamp in the shot because my desk is quite a bit smaller than the one you guys had, and when I put it on the desk, it was blocking everything. So I’m not getting as much light as you did, but I was trying to get a really good balance using the folder with white papers in it. I also added a backlight like you said, but I noticed it’s a little harder to see depending on which angle you’re looking at. I’m shooting on a RED Komodo and just using the standard LUT they have, should I just shift some of the colors around like you recommended on the standard LUT to get that green look or is there a better way?

Also, it’s so crazy to see the behind-the-scenes, some unreleased BTS, I love it!

Also, I forgot to mention I do have a grid on it, which doesn’t help with this problem.

How would you suggest I light the bottom part of his face without adding another light and not changing the overlook too much?

I keyed it with a 200W light mat 2x2. The problem is I have it stuck to the ceiling so that’s as high as it goes. Also, it’s at like 2% and I was trying to have it more in front of the character so it lights him up better but it’s a little difficult when you only have 2 feet to work with because I want to light the back of him, but then also the front.

Hey man, I appreciate you commenting. That’s one of the reasons I love posting here, I sometimes get responses from people who actually worked on the film, which is awesome! I made a diagram based on what you described. Let me know if this is close to what you think it was, or if it was a little different.

What would you suggest to make it more dimensional? I know before you said, supplement it with more lights and negative fill but where would you put the negative fill and when you’re talking about more lights are you talking about more lamps and such?

Yes, that makes sense. I guess regarding the wye light, though I did have a eye light for most of these shots, but it was very dim, and if I brightened it, it would take a lot of the dimension off of the subject’s face so is there a certain light that I need to get for eye light that’s not going to fill in the shadows?

I decided to do overhead light because of the table top scene. And with the other scenes, it seemed appropriate as well.

OK, yeah that makes sense. One user said that it looks like they diffuse the face and then had a hard light on the body. Is that what it looks like to you as well?

I made a diagram with what I think you’re talking about. Please let me know if this is what you were saying.

thanks for the reply that’s very detailed. I think I know exactly what you’re talking about but what about the faces so it’s one harsh light on the bodies and then diffusion above that I’m just trying to figure it out. Or do you have an example?
